Just how good a year did Adele have in 2011? Well, good enough that the UK chanteuse was also the Billboard Artist of the Year in 2012 based solely on the leftovers of her production from last year. To our knowledge, Adele only actually recorded one song in 2012—the good-not-great Bond theme "Skyfall"—and otherwise just coasted off her 2011 releases, but that main '11 release, sophomore album 21, was again the year's best-selling LP (the first album to go back-to-back since MJ's Thriller in '83 and '84), and she still ranked four songs on the magazine's 2012 Year-End Hot 100, including "Rolling in the Deep" at #74, which was released all the way back in 2010. Yikes.

Speaking of the Year-End Hot 100, that list is topped by Gotye and Kimbra's eight-week #1, "Somebody That I Used to Know." Most (including us) would probably argue that Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" (#2 on the list) should have been #1, but these Billboard year-end lists always tend to favor songs that came out earlier and thus were able to impact a larger portion of the year, so a summer hit like "Maybe" will usually lose to a spring smash like "Somebody." (This might also explain why The Wanted's "Glad You Came" outranked One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful," which is interesting.)

In any event, with those as the top two and fun.'s "We Are Young" at #3, 2012 has a top three to rank with just about any other year in recent memory. Good job, America. Let's have a new Artist of the Year for 2013 though, huh? An Adele hat trick would be a little beyond the pale. Here's the complete list, courtesy of Wikipedia:
