Tony Bennett's year of performing alongside beautiful ingenues continues, as he played the straight man to Carrie Underwood's made under country sensibilities on "It Had To Be You," off his award-winning Duets II. Out of respect to Bennett's standards Underwood's traded in twang and grit for control here, which still feels slightly jarring given the the power she brings to unbridled belting. Still, she did her best to sail through the big band number alongside Bennett's seemingly unflappable cool with a smile, even when he momentarily stepped on her line. But who cares? Underwood is just happy to be in the same room as "Mr. Bennett," her own vocals nearly trumped by that final mouthing of her partner's name to the audience, as if she had to pinch herself to make sure it was all real.
