One Canadian rock star is as good as another, we suppose. In a union that seemed too ideal to be true, Avril Lavigne was married to fellow Ontarian Deryck Whibley, lead singer of Sum 41, making for the perfect marriage of snotty pop-punk royalty. But somehow, the perfect-on-paper relationship was not built to last, and the couple divorced in 2009. Now, three years later, Lavigne has again turned her spousal affections to the North-of-the-Border rock scene, but this time with a far less predictable partner: Chad Kroeger of Nickelback.
Yes, reports say that Lavigne and Kroeger are to be wed, after a six-month courtship that somehow managed to fly so under-the-radar that we had no clue the two were even casual acquaintances up until a couple hours ago. It may be quick, but it doesn't appear unwelcome—"He makes her so happy," a family source tells People Magazine, who first reported the news. "Both of their families could not be more excited."
Despite the fact that the pair were both among the most commercially successful pop/rock acts of the early '00s, the coupling feels innately puzzling. Kroeger is a good ten years older than Lavigne, and Avril still acts far younger than her 27 years would suggest, while Nickelback's arena-ready sludge-rock and Lavigne's cheerleader-shopping-at-Hot-Topic spunk-pop likely have fairly few overlapping fans, even in the Great White North.
However, the relationship supposedly blossomed from a songwriting collaboration between the two, due to appear on Lavigne's upcoming fifth album. We'll wait to hear the song from which their unlikely union was formed before passing official judgment, perhaps. In the meantime, you tell us if the two seem like obvious soulmates:
