Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" might be pretty different in terms of subject—"Oh baby, give me one more chance" vs. "We are never getting back together...like, ever"—but musically, they're actually quite similar. They're both extremely rousing, affirming, and sheerly joyous pop songs, meticulously crafted and passionately delivered, and virtually impossible to not sing along to. They're also, y'know, two of the best pop songs ever.
This perhaps explains why mashup artist Chambaland's blend of the two, titled "Never Want You Back," is so successful. Taking the Taylor lyric and the J5 music, the song sounds impossibly natural, with the "Oooh-oooh-ooh-ooh-oooh"s from the Taylor pre-chorus sounding particularly like a lost backing vocal from the Jackson original. Even when the two songs are practically arguing with one another—Taylor's "We are never, ever" assertions backed with the Jackson "Show you that I love you!" chime-in—the feeling is right, since the mood and tone of the two songs remains identical despite taking the message in diametrically opposed directions.
Listen to the mashup over at Chambaland's tumblr, and if you somehow need a reminder what the two songs sound like independently...
