It's understandable that one of the Disney Channel's former marquee stars would be upset at an eating-disorder joke on the network, given that it was her suffering such an eating disorder that had a lot to do with the "former" part. Demi Lovato went to rehab about a year ago for treatment of "emotional and physical issues," largely related to her issues with bulimia, which eventually led to her leaving the channel's Sunny With a Chance program. So when a character on Disney's Shake It Up made a comment to the effect of "I could just eat you up, well, if I ate" for laughs, Demi was little amused, tweeting:
Disney was wisely contrite in response, with the channel's PR twitter account saying that "It's NEVER our intention to make light of eating disorders!" and the channel privately assuring Demi that the episode she was referring to would be pulled from rotation. It won't be the last joke about eating disorders ever to air on prime time TV, but you would hope that the Disney Channel could manage to avoid the temptation, at least.
