All the cool film girlies just came back from Berlin. Specifically, they are fresh from the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, and they still smell like cigarettes to prove it. Between anecdotes about how Berghain is ruined, they’re telling me how they watched Cillian Murphy (my father, emotionally) give another masterful, award-worthy performance in the Enda Walsh adaptation of Claire Keegan’s novel Small Things Like These. This is apropos of nothing, except that I was not in Berlin, so I will have to wait alongside everyone else to see one of my favorite books on screen later this year.

But how can I be bitter? This week, half of Los Angeles will flock to Texas for South By Southwest in Austin, and I’ll be delightfully distracted by a whole new slate of upcoming releases premiering at this year’s festival. There are so many new films to be excited about premiering at the festival — even without Cillian Murphy’s cheekbones.

Let’s get into it.

What I love about Fridays isn't that I get to log off work early (well, maybe a little) or that I have an excuse to attend happy hour...it's that I'm guaranteed new music. And now that we are fully in June, artists are churning out albums and singles to get us through the summer months. This week, especially, is a hot spot for new bangers for your playlists.

Rap fans have many reasons to rejoice this morning.

Young Thug and his Young Stoner Life collective returned today with Slime Language 2, a collaborative project that has the largest guest roster of 2021 so far. Drake, Lil Baby, Lil Uzi Vert, Gunna, Big Sean, Kid Cudi, Nav, and Meek Mill are but a few of the two dozen heavy hitters appearing across the record. For music fans uninterested in Hip-Hop, London Grammar also returned today with a great new record. So did The Offspring, if you're a fratty middle-aged man who's into that sort of thing.

Taylor Swift fans rejoice.

Once again, T-Swift has returned with (semi) new music. The release of Fearless (Taylor's Version), along with a deluxe edition of Demi Lovato's latest album, will no doubt cause pop fans to quake in their boots. For those not in the mood to sob or experience nostalgic epiphanies, there were also a handful of great releases today from lesser-known artists.

Wait ... Is Lil Nas X Going to Jail?

Controversy following Lil Nas X's "Call Me By Your Name" video and the Satan Shoes MSCHF sneaker collaboration (containing human blood, in case you forgot) led to the hashtag #FreeLilNasX

One of the top comments on any Briston Maroney music video is some version of, "How is this guy not huge?!"

Of course, to call the Nashville-based singer songwriter a small indie act isn't exactly correct either, since he's racked up nearly 53 million streams on Spotify on his song "Freakin' Out On the Interstate" alone and climbed to the top of alternative charts multiple times.
