American Idol's genius move, post-Simon, was to open up its previously closed universe (in which only former contestants or members of the show's own songbook could appear) and recognize its now-central place in pop culture. The charts are infested with the releases of Idol contestants, so in a way, everyone else on the chart had simply entered Idol's own world. Thus, not only is current pop superstar Katy Perry performing her latest single "E.T." on Idol tomorrow (with or without Kanye), it's being promoted as a major event.

Perry is planning on transforming the FX-heavy video into a live performance with the use of body suits and "a new style of choreography called 'bone breaking,'" which the video seems to indicate will involve dancers dislocating their shoulders. Will it look awesome or like an Ed Wood movie? We will see!
