NOTE: Bruce Jenner has requested the use of the male pronoun for now, so that is how we refer to him throughout the article.
Bruce Jenner is starting to fully embrace his new life as he progresses further in his gender reassignment journey—and, at the same time, is offering the world hope that some good can come from the reality TV plague that is the Kardashians.
“I identify as a woman, but it is very hard to say that, because I don’t want to disappoint people,” the 65-year-old father-of-six admitted at the start of the interview—before going on to share the story of the emotional roller coaster that has been his life, back from when he was “8 or 9-years old” and wanted to put a dress on.
Packed full of candid home video of the Jenners and Kardashians, the special offered insight into how Jenner himself is still struggling to come to terms with his transition—and, his fears of how it is emotionally impacting his family.
Bruce’s inner conflict was startling clear when it came to answering questions about his gender reassignment, especially those from Khloe and Kendall.
Jenner was often vague in his answers, or evasive, or keen to keep it light, in a bid to try and brush the situation under the carpet, clearly in fear of upsetting his daughters—which in actuality, just unintentionally made it all the worse.
"You have children, you don't have to answer to us, but you need to tell us!” A visibly upset Khloe demanded, during one emotionally charged conversation.
“I don't care that you want to [transition], I support you, I have always supported you, but I don't think it's fair that you won't tell us how close this is in the near future. We're still your kids!"
"I'm not lying, Khloe, I just didn't tell you," Jenner replied. "Am I doing it right Khloe? ... There's no right way to do this."
One of the most shocking revelations during Jenner’s 20/20 interview last month, was that Kim has been his biggest supporter, after Kanye West stepped in and helped bring some clarity to the situation.
“Kim told me a story,” Bruce told Sawyer. “And she said, ‘you know what really turned me around about thinking of all of this… Kanye… Kanye said, I can be married to most beautiful woman in the world, and I am.. I can have the most beautiful daughter, and I do… but I’m nothing if I’m not me…’ since then, Kim has been the most accepting.”
Kim’s support and encouragement was visible throughout the two hour special—and, at one point, the wise old sage pointed out to Bruce, that in this situation, honesty really is the best policy—to which Bruce replied sadly, ‘I’ve had to keep secrets all my life, it’s hard to start telling the truth.
“I’m so tired of lying, about my life, about who I am, about everything…after a while it just wears your ass out…..I just want to be honest.”
However, Bruce continued to remain evasive when it came to the subject of him undergoing full gender reassignment surgery.
“It’s hard to play the other side,” he replied to Kourtney, after she quizzed him about what comes next, “I’m just going to play it by ear."
“So, like, you don’t have a surgery to remove [your penis] and then that means you’re the woman?” Kim asked.
“Remove the little thing down there?” Bruce quipped. “You can do an awful lot down there…as of right now, no, as of right now, no.”
Meanwhile, Jenner made us love him all the more, when he shared his hopes about going public with his journey.
“The only thing I want out of this, is to help people,” Bruce said. “Not just the transgender community, it’s really bigger than that.. it’s so much more.
“There’s so many things about tolerance towards people, about understanding towards people. We need more tolerance in the world towards our fellow man—I mean, we’re all human beings put on this Earth, you know, we need to learn to live together.”
Amen to that Bruce Jenner….. Amen to that.
