Avril Lavigne's impact on the charts has weakened in recent years, but there's no denying that she's still one of the most successful female artists of the past decade. In fact, she's so successful that she's just been ranked as the most famous of all time Canadian by MIT.

Researchers for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology collected data on Canadians from 4,000 B.C. to 2010 who had a Wikipedia entry under their name in more than 25 languages, and found that the "Complicated" songstress was history's most famous Canadian.

Avril beat some seriously stiff competition to take home the title, including Pamela Anderson, Celine Dion, Jim Carrey, and Justin Bieber. You can take a look at the top ten below.

 1. Avril Lavigne

2. Jim Carrey

3. Justin Bieber

4. Celine Dion

5. Pamela Anderson

6. Leonard Cohen

7. Michael J. Fox

8. Bryan Adams

9. Frank Gehry

10. Nelly Furtado

It's just a shame that fame doesn't equal record sales, because Nelly Furtado and Avril haven't had a real hit in years, and Bieber's last album Journals bombed on the charts. Oh well, at least they've all already etched their names in the history books, so any success from this point on is just a bonus. (We're taking the half glass full approach to this one.)
