It's not been a great week for indie rock artists covering rap and R&B tracks—see the Dirty Projectors— but fortunately Courtney Love is here to save the day. The former Hole frontwoman took on Jay-Z's "99 Problems" during an event at the Sundance Film Festival last week, and in doing so unwittingly proved one of our pet theories about white rock stars covering rap: If you're going to do it, you've got to do it grizzled. Not all cutesy and pleased with yourself. Just pretend it's a Tom Waits song and you've got years of hard living behind you. Courtney kind of sounds like Patti Smith here. And it works!

Also, Love apparently takes the "aye" position in the great Should White People Say the N-word in Songs They're Rapping Along to? debate,  if you're the type of person to make note of things like that.
