We awoke Saturday morning to news of a horrible new Beyonce from the Great Gatsby soundtrack, a bizarre cover of Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" that, if the reports were correct, would make the Wanted's "Walk Like Beyonce" sound like "Hey Jude."
beyonce and andre's cover of "back to black" is like someone left their garbage in the sun for three days and then called it a cover song — steven j. horowitz (@speriod) April 27, 2013
A few minutes Googling confirmed that the song was so bad it upset Winehouse's father:
"I don't think [Beyonce] brings anything to it," he said, adding: "I wasn't asked for my permission if they could record it."
So imagine our surprise when we listened to the song and it actually wasn't bad! Beyonce doesn't belt the way Winehouse did, but that's not what the song's going for. Instead, they've transformed it into a minimalist techno jam that sounds of a piece with the rest of the Gatsby songs we've heard so far. It's a departure, but we like it!
