gillian anderson x files revival pay GillianAnderson X-Files Revival Pay Offer Was Half Of DavidDuchovny’s
In today’s totally unsurprising—and utterly maddening—news, Gillian Anderson’s X-Files revival pay offer was half that of co-star, David Duchovny’s.
Yeah, yeah, we know… it’s a man’s man’s world….. but, seriously?!!
The 47-year-old talked about her frustration at dealing with good old fashioned Hollywood misogyny and patriarchy, during an interview with the DailyBeast.
And, it’s not the first time she’s faced this issue
Anderson says she encountered the exact same problem during pay negotiations with Fox for the original series, back in 1993.
She shares that network execs even ordered her character, Dana Scully, to always walk a couple of steps behind Duchovny’s Fox Mulder, so they were never side-by-side on-camera—because, presumably, WOMAN KNOW YOUR PLACE!
I can only imagine that at the beginning, they wanted me to be the sidekick.
Or that, somehow, maybe it was enough of a change just to see a woman having this kind of intellectual repartee with a man on camera, and surely the audience couldn’t deal with actually seeing them walk side by side!
It took 7 years for her to get comparable pay—and blocking
Anderson credits her don’t-fuck-with-me attitude, and intolerance for being treated like a second class citizen purely because she has a womb, for eventually getting what she goddamned deserved.
I have such a knee-jerk reaction to that stuff, a very short tolerance for that shit. I don’t know how long it lasted or if it changed because I eventually said, ‘Fuck no! No!’
I don’t remember somebody saying, ‘Okay, now you get to walk alongside him.’ But I imagine it had more to do with my intolerance and spunk than it being an allowance that was made.
But, sure enough, fast forward two decades—and here we go again
It was shocking to me, given all the work that I had done in the past to get us to be paid fairly. I worked really hard toward that and finally got somewhere with it.
Even in interviews in the last few years, people have said to me, ‘I can’t believe that happened, how did you feel about it, that is insane.’ And my response always was, ‘That was then, this is now.’ And then it happened again! I don’t even know what to say about it. It is… sad.
Some things just never change—sad indeed.
