The first official picture from the set of the standalone Han Solo movie surfaced today on Twitter from the film's director Chris Miller (of 21 Jump Street fame).
The picture doesn't show us much, just a clapperboard with recording info. It does, however, include one interesting detail: the film's working title. Seeing as the movie so far lacks an official title, the famously funny Chris Miller has taken to calling it "Star Wars Red Cup." Get it? Solo cup. Also, we've got the further confusion of another "Star Wars" logo printed in red lettering. Does this mean all of my predictions are trash?
Other than this joke title and the fact that they have officially started shooting, what else do we know about this movie? Well, like Rogue One, this movie will take place in the interstitial timespace of the previous Star Wars trilogies. It's a movie about a young Han Solo and that means we get to fill the spaces previously occupied exclusively by our imagination's best rendition of Harrison Ford in a space cowboy costume with a canonical rendition of the Han Solo played by....
Alden Ehrenreich? If that name doesn't ring a bell, think about the best cowboy performance you've seen in the last few years. Yup, it's the hilarious dude from the Cohen brother's bizarrely witty Hail! Caesar. While Ehrenreich's character was much... simpler than Han Solo is, he certainly looks at home in ranch attire. Given that experience, I'm sure Ehrenreich will expertly navigate the equal parts charming and scoundrel character with ease.
Then, of course, we know that Childish Gambino a.k.a. Donald Glover will be playing Lando Calrissian. It's my sincerest hope that we only see the glory days of the legendary pair's friendship. However, there's always the chance that we see the Empire begin to sow the seeds of treachery in Lando's weak heart. Maybe we'll even get a reason for his betrayal. Did Han cheat his best friend out of a business deal? A romance? The possibilities are endless.
Beyond the speculation, we know that Woody Harrelson will be playing Han Solo's conniving mentor, Garris Shrike, and Emilia Clarke will make an appearance. We also know that the movie will shed some light on the origins of Han and Chewy's friendship.
