5 Movies to Make You Appreciate Your Mother

To celebrate Mother's Day this May 12, kick back and watch these moms from hell, so you can feel better about your own.

We're very sorry that your mother has a Twitter account, but that's not the worst attempt a mother has made to destroy her children's dignity.

When it comes to horror canon, there are abundant examples of deranged mothers and their spooky boys, from Rosemary's Baby (1968) to Psycho (1960). But modern film keeps up the tradition of cursed, possessed, psychotic, or generally wicked mothers who fill us with terror by supposedly signifying society's moral decay.

1. The Curse of La Llorona (2019)

Michael Chaves isn't winning any awards for his directorial debut, but his film adaptation of the Mexican folklore of La Llorona is a terrifying depiction of what happens when Linda Cardellini is assigned to be your social worker. A single mother takes drastic measures to protect her two sons from the ghost of Llorona, but when Anna (Cardellini), their caseworker, takes her clients away, she inadvertently puts her own two sons at risk.

2. Oculus (2013)

Sometimes, parents get buried under their work and lose sight of their priorities, like having a healthy, supportive marriage and spending quality time with the family. At other times, mothers become possessed by a demon living in an antique mirror and try to drive their children to suicide. Oh, moms!

3. Hereditary (2018)

As terrible as it seems, sometimes it's common sense not to like your mother. Annie (Toni Collette) is a wife and mother of two teenagers when her reclusive mother dies. Afterward, her mother's mistakes, and maybe her demonic spirit, wreak havoc on her family. No, seriously, imagine the worst thing a true crime addict could imagine and then add fire and a dead deer.

4. Mother! (2017)

Obviously, Darren Aronofsky's 2017 psychological horror film isn't the best choice for celebrating motherhood. But viewing its violent gore and Jennifer Lawrence's intense suffering for the sake of keeping a nice house might just inspire you to call your mother back.

5. Lyle (2015)

Gaby Hoffman stars in this trippy indie flick about a mother grieving the death of her toddler. She moves into a neighborhood of well-kept brownstones where it seems a bizarre number of toddlers have died. Director Stewart Thorndike adds to Rosemary Baby's tradition of paranoid mothers who may or may not be in grave, sickening danger. Or, you know, she's nuts.
