THANKS is hard at work; the emerging duo, a solo project conceived by Anders SG and Anders B of Danish pop band Alphabeat, released their latest single "Livin' My Life" last month. The catchy, effervescent electropop song is tinged with hints of funk, an energy that pervades all of THANKS' music. The duo has also been making waves overseas, after "Livin' My Life" hit the top 10 on the U.K. Spotify Viral Chart. They've since teamed up with Grammy-Award nominated Australian tastemaker Sam Sparro for "Your Man," a French-house inspired romp of a song.
We caught up with lead singer Anders SG via email to talk about the future of the duo, the Sparro collaboration, and how they blend funk beats with their electropop sound.
Anders SG: We were in Los Angeles for couple of weeks last year, where we teamed up with Sam Sparro at his studio and wrote "Your Man" on a hot and hungover afternoon. We know Sam from when we were all living in London and toured a bit together, but we've never had the chance to make any music together till now.
ASG: We think there's something very powerful about combining electronic pop which is very precise and mechanical with a feel that is more funky and human.
ASG: Yes! Quite a lot of interest from record labels, and we are probably gonna be working with a French label in the near future. Plus, we've been expanding our audience: a lot of people in India and Brazil are into THANKS now, which is really cool!
ASG: Artists like Mark Ronson, Basement Jaxx, Les Rythmes Digitales, Girl Talk and Fatboy Slim. Musical chameleons who use the past to create something for the present.
ASG: We really love Ed Banger Records. There's a real sense of a group of friends doing something because they love it, and they all inspire each other to get better and make music that's super powerful and original. There are so many great references to cool old-school stuff like 80s metal, MTV, Beavis and Butthead and G-funk in their visuals and the music. At the same time the music was—and is—super fresh and relevant. It's a label with a distinct sound like Sun or Stax or more underground stuff like Henry Street Music or Southern Fried Records. Pretty much the whole roster is some of our favorite music: Justice, Sebastian, Para One, Cassius, Mr Oizo, Breakbot, etc.
Also, Spike Jonze, especially because of his iconic videos for Daft Punk and Fatboy Slim, but also his commercials, films and music videos in general. His work has got a fantastic vibe: funny, beautiful, and deep at the same time.
ASG: Yes, working on finishing a couple of new songs at the moment, working titles are Porsche and Funk1.
ASG: Hopefully we'll be playing some big festivals and stuff 5 years from now!
