She was the R&B teen sensation that took the music world by storm.
And now fans of Aaliyah can finally see a trailer for the new TV biopic, which airs in the U.S. on Lifetime next month.
The 30-second clip shows Nickelodeon star Alexandra Shipp take on the role of the singing sensation who died in a 2001 plane crash at the age of 22.
In the clip, first shown on the E! News website, Aaliyah’s mom says to her:
“It takes more than some hot producer to create a superstar.
“It takes the right artist.”
It also cuts to what appears to be a music producer, saying:
“Do you realize what you got in this girl? There gonna be nobody like her.”
Alexandra, 23, looks the mirror image of Aaliyah. But, as Popdust.com previously reported, she was not the first actress picked to play the role.
Zendaya Coleman dropped out earlier this year after fans took to social media to protest the casting choice.
The 18-year-old later said that she didn’t quit because of “haters” who said she “wasn’t talented enough” or “black enough” to take on the role.
In an Instagram video, the actress said:
“The main reasons were the production value wasn’t there.
“There were complications with the music rights, and I just felt it wasn’t being handled delicately considering the situation.”
Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B is based on the biography, Aaliyah: More Than a Woman by Christopher John Farley.
But what Popdust wants to know is, will the alleged marriage between an underage Aaliyah and her musical mentor R. Kelly be shown in the movie?
We may have to wait until it premieres on Lifetime on November 15 to find out.
In the meantime, check out the trailer:
