Strong men also cry. No one would dare accuse a hard-lived rock and roll soldier like Anthony Kiedis of being soft, but that's not to say he doesn't have a vulnerable side as well. According to a recent interview with Q Magazine, a documentary featuring a certain 17-year-old Canadian pop star got the Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman by his soul to squeeze. "I sat on an airplane recently, coming from Hawaii to Los Angeles, with [producer] Rick Rubin just across the aisle, watching the Justin Bieber movie, 'Never Say Never,'" said Kiedis. "I cried twice during that film and I want the world to know that!"
So which part of Never Say Never was it that caused the singer to crack? "They were doing this very cheesy giveaway of concert tickets to 16-year-old girls," testified Kiedis. "The cheesiness didn't matter -- it was the reaction of the kids. When you saw those little girls crying deliriously, I lost it." Perhaps Kiedis saw something of himself in the young girls which brought him back to his early L.A. punk days of sneaking into concerts by X and The Germs. For his part, though, Kiedis says he wasn't alone in his tears: " "I decided to tell Rick afterwards and he said, 'I was also sobbing during that point in the movie.' There you have it."
The power of Bieber compels us yet again.
