Every teen-pop guy or boy bander comes of age in the same way eventually: emulating Michael Jackson, who successfully became something other than "that adorable kid from the Jackson 5." Bobby Brown did it. Justin Timberlake did it. And Justin Bieber was bound to try it eventually, never more obviously than this promo single and Scooter Braun's favorite track.
Yes, that's a Jackson sample--specifically, one from "We've Got a Good Thing Going" from Ben--and the "mmm-hmmm" backing vocals and drifting piano line could plausibly be mistaken for them. Ben, incidentally, was a Jackson 5-era album, and not something from when MJ was fully MJ. That's not a bad metaphor for the track, in fact; you don't even have to listen too closely to hear the joins between Bieber's takes, and vocally, he's caught in that dead zone between Forever, Michael and Off the Wall. Sure, it's a colossal leap forward from My World 2.0, but you've got to have perspective here.
None of this is a knock on Bieb, per se. It just means that this is an early try. In two years or so, Bieber's going to release "Die in Your Arms" 2.0, and it's going to be pretty great. Until then.
