With the surplus of New Year's Eve programming that has sprung up in recent years, it's hard to believe that Dick Clark's classic holiday countdown show New Year's Rockin' Eve hasn't gone the way of the cassette tape. After 40 years on the air, the former American Bandstand host proves his relevance once again, by snagging Lady Gaga for a live performance at this year's show. Clark's co-host Ryan Seacrest announced on Thursday that Gaga will help ring in 2012 from Times Square on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2012. The broadcast will also feature performances from the West Coast, where Fergie will be holding court as the Pacific time zone's MC. Good luck explaining Lady Gaga to your parents.

After performing at the American Idol finale and this year's VMAs, at this point, it's not a holiday and/or Grand Occasion if Lady Gaga is not somehow involved, right? New York City will certainly be alive with the spirit of Mother Monster this winter, what with her holiday-themed window display at Barney's department store and the expected epic countdown performance, for those sober enough to remember. Yet another reason for tourists to flock to New York! So if your New Year's resolution was going to be to watch less television or listen to less Gaga, better luck next year.
