It's been a long five years since La Roux broke out with "Bulletproof" and briefly became everybody's favourite new electro-pop act. The duo finally got around to releasing a new single today, and with such a huge gap between their debut and their return, it's nice to hear that they haven't forgotten what made us all fall in love with them in the first place.
The new tune titled, "Let Me Down Gently," sees La Roux returning to their signature vintage synth-pop sound, but with a new twist. While their first album was somewhat jagged and abrasive, "Let Me Down Gently" is sublimely smooth with a slow-burning quality to it. It gradually gathers steam as things progress, before eventually running out of energy and abruptly collapsing into a weary heap by the end. If "Bulletproof" was riding the burgeoning EDM wave of the time, then "Let Me Down Gently" is La Roux's answer to some of the more ballad-y and experimental music topping the charts these days.
All in all, an excellent comeback single, and one that was certainly worth the wait.
