Katy Perry has taken such delight in burying her "Teenage Dream" persona that it was hard to figure out exactly how much of her old sound she was going to jettison for the Prism era. She promised something darker, more mature—but did that mean Avril Lavigne, or Nine Inch Nails?
With the early leak of "Roar," the first single from the new album, we've got an answer: She's still making radio-friendly pop, but the candy-colored frills have been stripped out for a bigger, more anthemic feel—it's bubblegum filtered through the Mumford and Lumineers gang's folk-rock stomp. We're also hearing some Rusted Root in the way Katy bends her vowels towards the sky, which is not a bad thing at all.
