PREMIERE | Lord & Lady Drop 'No Ghost' EP
Old-timey flavors mingled with yummy alt pop
Los Angeles-based alt pop duo Lord & Lady premiere their new EP, No Ghost, today on Popdust.
The Lord of the duo is Scott Oatley (vocals, guitar, piano), while the Lady is Rachel Panchal (vocals, piano). Music publisher and artist mentor, Judy Stakee, brought the two together. Their combined credits include High School Musical, Jurassic World,Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Glee, and The Simpsons.
Their song "La La Land Medley," used by Russian figure skaters Kristina Astakhova and Alexey Rogonov during their pairs free skate performance at the Winter Olympics, went viral on YouTube, accumulating 4.9 million views.
Lord & Lady released their self-titled debut EP in 2015. The No Ghost EP diverges stylistically from their first EP, embracing an edgier alt pop sound than the previous EP.
"Lyrically, the first EP had a lot of themes about relationships and coming out of them, while now, tunes like 'No Ghost' dive deeper into the being vulnerable part of relationships when you're getting to know someone deeply. We stay true to our organic roots and these songs have a classic old timey feel to them, but infused with a lot of modern elements, in a unique way," says Rachel.
Comprising four tracks, No Ghost opens with "Dance It Out," a radiant alt pop tune with hints of retro country pop running through it. Merging their voices, Oatley and Panchal deliver luminous harmonies rippling with scintillating hues.
TBH this is what our co-writing sessions mostly look like. Sitting in silence for 10 minutes pondering what the next lyric should be....then swapping ideas 💡 BIG shout-out to our photographer @emily.magers!

"The Lift" features a throbbing bass and light piano. Separate at first, on the bridge their two voices blend together, achieving luscious fusion on the chorus. An old-fashioned quality permeates the melody, imbuing it with warm romantic colors that coalesce deliciously with modern alt flavors, making the music infectiously alluring.
"When Love Becomes A War" exudes darker colors, infusing the tune with sonic tension, like the collision of warm and cold air masses. The title track reflects gentle, creamy flavors escalating to tighter savors on the chorus, which glows with energy and scrumptious harmonies.
No Ghost captivates with its sonic charm, innovative melding of old and new elements, and dazzling harmonies.
