Matt Damon Definitely DOESN'T Want The Gays To Stay In The Closet, OK?!!

Oh Matt Damon!

The 44-year-old seems to be spending one hell of a lot of time explaining himself these days, and he was doing so once again, on the Ellen Show Tuesday—Popdust has video.

Will Ben Affleck Finally Cheer The Fuck Up?

This time round, he was clarifying recent comments that he made regarding gay actors, that were picked up by a ton of websites and turned into Damon basically saying "gay actors should stay in the closet."

Which, not surprisingly, given his leftie-leaning credentials, and cool demeanor, wasn’t what he meant at all.

It all kicked off after Britain’s The Guardian published a Q & A with Damon, during which he said “I think you’re a better actor the less people know about you period.”

Harmless enough, right? Well, not according to some, who clearly have nothing better to do with their time.

To add yet more context, the comments followed an explanation from Damon about how he didn’t even bother denying rumors, back in the Good Will Hunting days, that he and Ben Affleck were gay, because he didn't want it to seem like being gay was a "disease" he didn't have.

"I think it must be really hard for actors to be out publicly," he continued. "But in terms of actors, I think you’re a better actor the less people know about you period. And sexuality is a huge part of that. Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play."

Bingo.

Ellen Degeneres, a longtime friend of Damon’s, gave him a chance to clear the air.

"I was talking about actors are more effective when you know less about their personal lives," he explained. "But in this day and age, I said this thing to The Guardian and it got turned into and I was just trying to say actors are more effective when they’re a mystery. Right?

"Somebody picked it up and said I said gay actors should get back in the closet. Which is like, I mean it’s stupid, but it is painful when things get said that you don’t believe. And then it gets represented that that’s what you believe, because in the blogosphere there’s no real penalty for just taking the ball and running with it. Ya know what I mean? You’re just trying to click on your thing."

This recent contrived controversy follows on the heels of Damon getting into a social media fueled shit storm after he was shown repeatedly interrupting black female producer Effie Brown during a segment about diversity in cinema, on his show, Project Greenlight.

Damon subsequently blamed bad editing for making him come across as a white privileged asshole:

My comments were part of a much broader conversation about diversity in Hollywood and the fundamental nature of Project Greenlight which did not make the show. I am sorry that they offended some people, but, at the very least, I am happy that they started a conversation about diversity in Hollywood.
