It's fair to say that the Irish musical film Once has done pretty well since it came out in 2007, and it's too obvious to mention how well the soundtrack in general and "Falling Slowly" in particular have done--the latter's one of those songs that you've probably heard, even if you couldn't identify who sings it. Winning a Oscar helps with that.
Now then. If you've got a really successful movie, one that won an Academy Award for its music, what's the next step? A Broadway musical, naturally. Rumors had gone around for a while that a Broadway adaptation would be made of Once and its soundtrack--written by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová of The Swell Season and much of which was previously recorded by Hansard's band The Frames. They're now official: the musical, whose Off-Broadway run has already started, will start previews at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater on Feb. 28 and open March 18.
A lot of you aren't in New York, we realize. Good thing both the movie and soundtrack are well worth checking out on their own. A few of the earlier tracks are below.
