Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to just five years for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, and is expected to serve just ten months of that sentence.
The paralympian, nicknamed "Blade Runner" because of his prosthetic legs, was convicted of culpable homicide but cleared of murder in the death of Reeva on Valentine's Day 2013.
Unlike previous appearances in court where Pistorius indulged in plenty of theatrical vomiting and sobbing, the athlete was subdued as Judge Thokozile Masipa read his sentence.
The BBC reports Pistorius is "already accommodated at Kgosi Mampuru," where he is expected to be held in a one-man room in the hospital wing for the duration of his sentence.
His defense attorney Barry Roux expects his client to serve 10 months in prison with the rest of his sentence being carried out under house arrest. The Steenkamp family lawyer Dup De Bruyn (who does believe justice has been served) thinks it will be more like two years in prison.
Judge Masipa said the sentence was "fair and just, both to society and to the accused. A non-custodial sentence would send the wrong message to the community. On the other hand, a long sentence would also not be appropriate either, as it would lack the element of mercy... hopefully, this judgment on sentence shall provide some sort of closure for the family."
It's a pity there was no mercy for his victim. RIP Reeva.
