Art rock darling St. Vincent has returned with a new single paying tribute to "New York." Clark is known for the emotional highs and lows of her music, and "New York" is very much in that vein. The downbeat track is tinged with nostalgia for a lost city and a lost love. "I have lost a hero, I have lost a friend / But for you, darling, I would do it all again," Clark remembers a love that has slipped through the pipe line. In the context of a city that no longer feels like home, it's all the more heartbreaking.
So many people feel alone in the concrete jungle, and Clark captures that solitude and heroism in the heartbreaking track. She talks about a New York that doesn't feel like New York, about an empty Astor Place that, without her "old crew", has become a graveyard of longing. Perhaps only Clark could make reminiscing this chic, sad, and victorious.
