Women are killing it in the music industry, and the world of song lovers couldn't be happier! In our column, #WomenCrushWednesday, we'll feature an awesome lady whose tunes are blowing up our playlists and ask them about their musical journey.
ASHE is featured in our column this week to discuss her project past and present. The California native completed her degree from Berklee College of Music and then went on to gain international exposure plus have more than 75 million streams of Spotify for her work. Catch her latest video and thoughts on upcoming music below.
How did you become interested in writing and recording music?
Music has always been so fascinating to me in how it touches people, I've always wanted to be a part of that.
You have a background in jazz and attended college for music. How have these experiences influenced your song writing?
I'd say jazz influences my vocal and vocal melodies the most and college/music theory influences my music apart from the vocals.
Your music has been described as beach-pop. What exactly is that genre and how do you feel about the label?
Haha, I have no idea what that genre is, but I think I'm flattered? I can definitely say I'm inspired by the Beach Boys a lot, so maybe some of that comes through. I don't mind labels, I think people need them to make life make sense but I don't have a specific label for my music.
The new material you're working on has been classified as more "grunge." Do you think your work has evolved?
I know that my work has evolved and will continue to evolve. I think saying it's "grunge-y" might be a little aggressive but I can see some of those raw influences in it for sure.
You've also been named an artist to watch out for this year by Vevo. What does that mean to you?
Meeeaaannss pressures on! Haha no, means that I'm very honored and I hope I live up to it.
You recently released a new video and song, "Girl Who Cried Wolf." What inspired this track?
I've battled my own self-doubt my entire life and "Girl Who Cried Wolf" is my "standing up to myself" song. It's my way of saying, I can do this and I'll do it in my own way.
Louis the Child also released a track where you lent your vocals. How was that collaboration?
Yeah! I wrote that record with them and very proud to say it's as weird and fun as we are when we write together. I love collaborating with them, they're family.
You're currently on tour, and you've toured with The Chainsmokers and performed at Coachella. What are some of your favorite things about being on stage?
Almost tripping and then catching myself is always fun, haha. Just getting to connect with so many people at once. Whether it's a large crowd or small, I always try to be vulnerable and myself - in return, I feel like the crowd is vulnerable and themselves back which is a really beautiful thing to watch over the course of my set.
What's coming up for you in 2018?
Right now I'm getting ready to release my next single and finishing up my very first EP! I could not be MORE excited and cannot help but admit I hope people really love it. If all goes well, I'll be headlining towards the latter half of the year!
