Foul-mouthed teenage Tumblr-rap crew Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All are the enfants terrible of the rap world. They've been called everything from genius vanguards to rape-obsessed homophobes to the new punk rock. But there's one thing they've never been until now: commercial. (Well, as commercial as a video with bug-eating, vomiting, bloody noses, suicide, and swear words can get, anyway.)
The first single off OFWGKTA leader Tyler's upcoming Goblin certainly doesn't sound like any Billboard-charting rap record we've ever heard, but after posting a whopping 11 full-length albums for free on their Tumblr, "Yonkers" is the first Odd Future song that will be for sale at the iTunes Stores. Or as Tyler so selflessly tweeted, "For The Past 2 Fucking Years We Have Been Giving You F****t-Ass Fucks Free Albums. The Least You Could Do Is Buy YONKERS On iTunes Tuesday."
"Yonkers" maintains Tyler's penchant for doomy textures, claustrophobic groans and shout-outs to his psychiatrist. The beat is definitely a little bit cleaner than the lo-fi, screwed-down, trillwave scuzz of his first album, but it's not exactly Drake either. It's still indebted to the skeletal, noir sound of Wu-Tang, but sounds less like Wu-Tang underwater. As for the raps, he's definitely on the offensive (no pun intended) regarding anyone that thinks Odd Future is going pop: "I'll crash that fuckin' airplane that that f****t n***a B.o.B is in/And stab Bruno Mars in his goddamn esophagus/And won't stop until the cops come in."
So yeah, as our asterisks will attest, there's also no shortage of Tyler's button-pushing (or as the kids say, "trolling"), peppering his phrases with homophobic slurs, misogynistic imagery and sacrilegious potty-mouthery—all of which we would also say might keep him off the charts, except for the fact that Eminem is up for 10 Grammys this year. Regardless of the problems we continue to have with his choice of words, Tyler is truly an evocative wordsmith—his gory stuff is always surrounded by clouds of his fears, his misogynistic posturing is countered with decidedly un-macho stories of him dancing around the house in "all-over-print panties," and his steely splattercore works wonders with the tense, nail-biting, two-note bassline.
The hit musical will drop on Disney+ July 3rd.
Lin Manuel-Miranda's Hamilton has taken the theater world by storm since its 2015 Broadway premiere.
A hip-hop musical about America's founding fathers doesn't sound immediately appealing, but Manuel-Miranda's brilliant song writing and diverse casting not only captured the attention of audiences, but proved that major change is possible within an art form as encumbered by traditions as musical theater.
The white supremacist Trump fan is back in jail—again—a symbol of everything wrong with America's prison system.
"I am a white supremacist. The Aryan Nation will rule the world!"
If you think that sounds like the words of a man who is about to be deservedly choked out, you're partially right. But before 36-year-old Nicholas Arnold Schock got taken down by a group of brave bystanders in Nokomis Florida, he would do a lot more to deserve such aggressive treatment.
The viral video of the incident opens with a belligerent Schock, half-naked, shouting at the staff of Pop's Sunset Grille to "call Donald Trump, he's gonna come get me out of prison." It's not evident what sparked the confrontation—whether Schock was refusing to wear a mask in the popular open-air venue, or simply wanted to strip naked. Whatever the case, Schock was seemingly convinced that Donald Trump would have his back in the ordeal.
