The world’s first agency for transgender models will officially launch next month in Los Angeles.
Cecilio Asuncion, director of Apple Model Management's new L.A. branch, has already signed six models and is currently seeking nine more.
Asuncion's mission is to get the big national brands like the Gap and Old Navy to feature his models and to thereby reach mainstream America.
He can see his models in a Target ad, noting:
If you have a trans woman pushing a cart looking so happy that she’s buying dish-washing liquid — because, you know, everyone’s happy buying dish-washing liquid — who cares what gender they are? Who cares? Why should that be an issue?
Ascuncion is hopeful that Apple Model Management will foster acceptance of transgender models to the point that they are regarded 'as models first and trans women or men second.' He is eager to eliminate any stigma, but aware that it will take effort and commitment.
It is time for the LGBT community to step up and help one another. The lay of the land is changing. We truly want to develop the best models.
While interest in Caitlyn Jenner suggests the time is right for trans models to go commercial, experts point out that the ratings for I Am Cait will ultimately test the market's real strength.
