The Product
PlantPaper is a next-generation toilet paper that’s tree-free, toxin-free, and entirely biodegradable.
Unlike conventional toilet paper made from virgin trees or recycled paper that can contain harsh chemicals and use heavy bleaching processes to get that bright white color, PlantPaper uses unbleached FSC®-certified bamboo as its raw material. Bamboo is the fastest-growing plant in the world and regenerates naturally after harvesting. It requires less water and is considered a carbon-neutral source of plant fiber.
Its 3-ply, softly embossed sheets promise a balance of strength, absorbency, and comfort, all packaged in 100% plastic-free boxes. PlantPaper positions itself as a cleaner, smarter alternative that’s as good for your health as it is for the planet.
Our First Impressions
Most people never think about what’s in the paper they use several times daily on a delicate and sensitive part of their body.
Many commercial toilet paper brands have been found to test positive for PFAS (also called forever chemicals). Others may contain formaldehyde, and most toilet paper is chemically bleached during processing. Even most recycled options have traces of BPA and BPS due to contamination in the recycled pulp.
It’s unsettling that these everyday goods aren’t as clean as they seem. That’s why PlantPaper caught our attention.
Still, we were skeptical. Generally, when a product focuses on health and sustainability, there are trade-offs, like higher cost or thin or scratchy sheets that don’t do the job.
But once we did the math, the difference came out to less than the cost of a cup of coffee from our favorite café per person, per month. Could this finally be the TP that ticks every box – toxin-free, sustainable, effective, and a smart value?? We had to find out.
Our Verdict
What surprised us most is that PlantPaper feels like an upgrade rather than a compromise. And after using it for several weeks, we will never go back.
The strength, softness, and absorbency are noticeable immediately. Unlike most premium conventional paper brands, the sheets don’t pill or give off dust. And it doesn’t crumble or feel rough like most bamboo and recycled options we’ve tried.
Our editors’ initial reactions to the color (accurately described by Vanity Fair as “oat-latte”) were mixed. Some said it looked basic; others praised the color for its natural aesthetic. But after a week of use, we knew we would never go back to bleached white toilet paper.
We also noticed that we use fewer sheets, likely because of the 3-ply thickness, larger sheet size, and dual-texture. It’s more effective and less wasteful for only a few extra dollars a month.
Initially, we rolled our eyes at the idea of a TP subscription. But it turned out to be one of the most hassle-free subscriptions we’ve ever tried. No orders showing up by surprise, no need to remember a password. We wish all subscriptions were as easy to use as this.
Final Thoughts
