My Toddler Wouldn’t Lie Down at Bedtime – Then We Tested This at Target

My Toddler Wouldn’t Lie Down at Bedtime – Then We Tested This at Target

I did not go to Target looking for a new bedtime routine.

I went in for the usual things – diapers, snacks, toothpaste. My 3-year-old daughter, Charlotte, was with me, which meant we also made our usual slow pass through the toy aisle.

That is where we noticed Luna StoryTime.

I’d actually heard the name before – it had picked up recognition from Good Housekeeping and Family Choice Awards, plus a shoutout on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I remembered reading that it was supposed to help with bedtime, so I was already curious.

Standing in the Target aisle, it looked like a cute story projector. But then I saw the demo screen show it in action. It wasn’t loud or flashy. It wouldn’t be another screen I would have to pry away from her at bedtime.

What caught my attention about the demo

The Target display made Luna easy to understand right away. It is a 3-in-1 storytime projector, audio player, and nightlight designed for young children. The stories can be projected onto a wall or ceiling, and each character includes around 30 minutes of story and song content.

Most nights, Charlotte and I read together, but some nights bedtime gets messy – I’m trying to finish dishes or fold laundry, and she’s asking for “one more story” before I’ve finished the first one.

Luna looked like a way to keep the storytime ritual going on the nights I needed a little help.

Why it felt different from a typical kids’ screen

I am not against screen time, but I am careful with it at bedtime. A tablet can start as “just one episode” and somehow become a negotiation, a meltdown, or a child who’s more awake than before we started.

Luna felt different. The demo showed a soft, storybook-like experience rather than fast-moving animation – visuals to support the story, not overstimulate. It seemed designed to help kids wind down, not rev them up.

Why I put it in my cart

The price helped – I expected something with a projection feature to run well over $100, but the starter unit was around $60, with additional characters priced at $15–20 each.

The no-Wi-Fi, no-app setup mattered too. I didn’t want another product that needed an account or something to troubleshoot at bedtime – just pick a character and press play.

And because it comes from Cottage Door Press, a children’s publisher already on our bookshelf, I knew it was made by people who actually understand bedtime.

So I bought it.

What happened at home

That night, after pajamas and teeth brushing, Charlotte picked her character (her favorites are  Marshall from PAW Patrol or Elmo), and we projected the story onto her ceiling – which quickly became our favorite setup, since she naturally lies back on her pillow to watch instead of sitting upright with a device in her hands.

It didn’t replace books; we still read together. But it gave us a way to keep storytime going on the nights she wanted one more story and I needed bedtime to keep moving. Sometimes we watch together, sometimes I sit nearby, and sometimes it gives her a few calm, independent minutes while I finish the last things that always happen at the end of the day.

Charlotte’s verdict

Charlotte asks for Luna most nights now. She likes choosing the character, watching the story appear on the ceiling, and repeating little phrases the next day. It’s become something she looks forward to, which makes bedtime feel a lot easier – even if it hasn’t made every night perfect (she is still three, after all).

But it has made the transition calmer. It gives her something engaging without winding her up, and makes bedtime feel special without making it harder. The stories pair narration with visuals. She’s getting context clues the same way she would if I were reading to her with a picture book, and I can tell it’s expanding her vocabulary.

My verdict

Honestly, this is exactly the kind of thing I love about shopping in Target – you stumble onto stuff you weren’t looking for, and sometimes it turns out to be exactly what you needed.

For our family, Luna StoryTime has become a way to keep the story ritual alive on busy nights and make the room feel a little more magical as Charlotte winds down. Between the ceiling projections and the calmer bedtimes, it’s easy to see why it had earned all that recognition before we ever tried it ourselves.

If your store has the Luna StoryTime demo screen, take a moment to see how it works and thank me later.

Make bedtime feel a little more magical with Luna StoryTime.
