11 Football Movies Better Than the Super Bowl

"This is for Rudy, Coach." *sobs*

Rudy

The Super Bowl is upon us, which means millions of people will be emotionally investing in the man-on-man performance of football.

Despite being a child of a die-hard sports fan whose identity hinged upon the successes and failures of his favorite organization (the Cleveland Browns, I sh*t you not–can you imagine an entire lifetime of being fanatical over the Cleveland Browns?), I don't understand the hype around football.

Thanksgiving has always been about food.

We suffer through the awkward small talk and often anti-climactic football games for the sake of the meal that awaits us at the end of the day, and even then that "meal" is representative of ethnic cleansing and genocide. But there are a few other pros that lay outside of gorging yourself on mashed potatoes. The holiday always falls on a Thursday, which means you always have a four day weekend. Black Friday is also the following day, so despite whatever infuriating experiences you may have on Thanksgiving with your family, you can at least rest easy knowing you can go out and buy enough stuff to numb the pain.

These reasons alone are enough to warrant celebration. So while you clench your jaw through what is almost guaranteed to be a painfully long afternoon, why not curate some music to help elevate your mood and remind yourself that a four day weekend of relaxation awaits?

30 Ridiculous Movies That Received a 0% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes

To some extent, a 0% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes is an honor.

Vertical Entertainment

Even amongst trash cinema, the Rotten Tomatoes 0% are a special breed of stank.

For a movie to receive a 0% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it can't just be bad, and it can't even just be awful. No, a Rotten Tomatoes 0% movie needs to be so terrible that it convinces even the most contrarian film reviewers to unanimously agree that yes, the movie in question is objectively worthless. To put this into perspective, 21% of film critics gave Tom Hooper's Cats a Fresh rating even though, or perhaps because, it featured Dame Judy Dench licking her own crotch. For even starker perspective, one reviewer out of 80 even gave Daddy Day Camp a Fresh rating, and incredibly, it just so happened to be former Popdust reviewer Fred Topel:

TRIGGER WARNING: Sexual Assault, Rape, Non-consent

In a video essay posted to the Pop Culture Detective YouTube channel, media critic Jonathan McIntosh deep dives into pop culture's prevailing representations of sexual assault against men as comedy.

Divided across two half-hour videos, "Sexual Assault of Men Played for Laughs - Part 1 Male Perpetrators" and "Sexual Assault of Men Played for Laughs - Part 2 Female Perpetrators," McIntosh establishes a disturbing pattern behind the language and ideology of male sexual assault "humor."

"Uncut Gems" Is a Beautiful Feel-Bad Movie

Now available on Netflix fo f*ck you up.

Uncut Gems is the most uncomfortable, stress-inducing film I've maybe ever seen, and it's really, really good.

I had no preconceived notions about this film going in, except it's "supposed to be good" and stars Adam Sandler. It was an odd choice for my dad to want to see it, given he generally hates Sandler's movies. Luckily for him, the former SNL cast member's portrayal of Howard "Howie" Ratner is unlike anything audiences have ever seen him do before. It's not surprising that there is already Oscar buzz surrounding his performance.
