I was lucky to grow up in a house with big ol' dogs. My parents love animals and throughout my childhood, we were never without our faithful companions. Since moving out, I have missed having a dog at home to greet me. So, the first chance I had, I moved to a pet-friendly apartment and adopted my first canine, one that I could call my own, Ape!

I knew the basics of what he needed (they are like babies) but moving into my tiny apartment, I needed a smaller dog and I had no idea what to feed him. Do they still eat the same amount of food? Obviously not, right?

I didn't know where to start, but I needed something for Ape soon. I went to the pet shop and picked up the first bag of food that was for dogs under 15 lbs. I had no idea what it contained but if it was in the pet shop it had to be good, right? Ape was all excited when he saw me getting the bowl ready but then showed immediate disinterest when I placed it in front of him. If anything he seemed scared of the bowl now.

I started getting worried so the next day I cooked a little piece of chicken separately for Ape, and started scouring the internet. I could not believe how many different options were out there and my newsfeed became flooded with ads. Originally, It seemed that every company had the same product, however I did notice one company that keep standing out, Spot & Tango. This was a personalized food plan just for your pup!

I did a bit more research and found that they have two varieties of food that are both personalized. All their recipes are made with 100% human-grade ingredients and contain no artificial preservatives, fillers, or additives. They have three different Fresh recipes: Turkey & Red Quinoa, Beef & Millet, and Lamb & Brown Rice.

Their UnKibble is dry dog food that is made with your dog's weight, breed, and activity level in mind. It's developed by Vets and all you need is one scoop. Their method is unique and all their ingredients (meat and veg) are dehydrated through a Fresh Dry Process - a low-temperature dehydration technique that lets the food retain all its natural minerals, vitamins, and even color. It has everything your dog needs. It seemed too good to be true… but I decided to give it a try and ever since the first bag arrived, Ape can't wait for dinner time.

He runs over to me the moment he hears the bag opening then darts to his bowl as soon as I take out the scoop. He nearly gobbles it all up before it reaches the bowl. It's actually funny to watch. Right now Ape loves the Chicken & Brown Rice recipe, but I can't wait to get him to try Beef & Barley. He is like a kid, always wanting to try something new.

My plan with Spot & Tango is so great that they change his food as he grows as well. Their subscription started after my two-week trial and depending on your dog's portion sizes, you receive food every month or every two weeks. This allows me to make adjustments to his food in between shipments as he grows. The plan is flexible and you can skip, cancel or pause at any time.

Ape has tried a few fresh recipes, but Unkibble is something he absolutely loves. It has all the good stuff Ape needs, but unlike my homemade food, it is tasty and well-balanced. UnKibble has made Ape so much happier, healthier and energetic. It is the perfect dog food and all he needs is a single scoop.

We want the best food for ourselves and our family, dogs are a vital part of the family and it's time we got them the best food too. Spot & Tango have the perfect personalized food for your dog, give it a try!

5 Top Brands Compared: The Ultimate Dog Food Review

The best dog food for weight loss, older dogs, and more. Plus the most *overrated* brand.

Photo: Nikolay Tchaouchev on Unsplash

It seems like a new brand of dog food pops up on pet store shelves every day, and with all the untrustworthy advertising it can be difficult to tell which are worth the hype. Our dog experts did the research, comparing ingredients and scouring the internet for honest reviews, and came up with this ultimate abridged dog food guide, to get down to the brass tacks of which food you should be buying your dog -- without all the fluff. We breakdown the most overrated brand, the best dog food for weight loss, excellent senior dog food options, and the top kibble.

Pedigree Dog Food, The Most Overrated

Pedigree is a popular brand, but is it really good for your dog? There are a lot of variations, but we used the canned Chopped Ground Dinner with Chicken, Beef, and Liver as a good example of their selections. All in all the ingredients are OK, but there's a couple of huge red flags when it comes to their meat. The second ingredient listed is "chicken by-products" followed by "meat by-products." If you're not familiar, these don't exactly meet the description of what you would normally consider meat. Chicken by-product is what's left of the chicken after choice cuts have been removed. This can include some pretty scary stuff like organs, feet, beaks, and undeveloped eggs.

The customer reviews aren't all pretty, either. While most testimonials are positive, some claimed that Pedigree brand blends were making their dogs sick. On Consumer Affairs, Kieth from Thatcher, Arizona says, "Bought this poison at Walmart until I could get my regular brand. All 4 of my dogs were sick within 5 days. Clear vomit, diarrhea, lymph nodes swollen in the neck, not eating." Yikes!

Nutrisource Dog Food, Best For Senior Dogs

Nutrisource is a lesser known brand that focuses on bioavailability, which emphasizes a dog's ability to actually digest and absorb the most nutrients in their food. Nutrisource has a formula specifically designed for senior dogs, making it our top choice for senior dog food. It's also a grain-free formula, for sog parents looking for the best grain-free options for their pup. Their turkey and lentils formula is specifically created for dogs 7 years of age and older. It uses Sel-Plex for optimal brain health and reduced inflammation, which is important for mature dogs. They also add Chondroitin and Glucosamine to help dogs with limited mobility.

There are few customer reviews online which is usually a good sign, since dog parents with bad experiences will usually rush to write a review. However, DogFoodGuide gives the brand a 4.5/5, which is a pretty good score. They note a slight red flag: carrageenan, a thickening ingredient which some studies link to carcinogenic effects.

Ollie, Best Dog Food For Weight Loss

Ollie is a customizable, human grade dog-food brand that you can't buy in the pet store. They deliver meals weekly with subscriptions for customer convenience. Other than their human-grade ingredients, what makes Ollie stand out is that they create one of a kind formulas for your pet based on their age, weight, breed, and lifestyle. Ollie is our pick for best dog food for weight loss because, in addition to being able to formulate your pups meal specifically to help them lose weight, Ollie sends every meal with a perfect-portion scoop that keeps you from accidentally overfeeding by making portion control easy. The special scoop also makes Ollie our top choice if you're looking to change your dog's food, say from dry to wet. If you prefer being able to physically pick up your food in a store instead of having it delivered, you may find the subscription to be a downside of Ollie.

All brands have an occasional bad testimonial, and there are one or two users who didn't like getting their dog food delivered or didn't feel Ollie was right for them. But most reviews make it clear that dog parents see real changes in their pups energy and coat shine.

Natural Balance, Best Kibble

Natural Balance wins our review for best dry food on the market. It's widely available, including from most pet stores and for one day delivery from Amazon Prime. Their ingredients are much higher quality than most dry foods, and they don't use "meat meal" though they may use "chicken meal" or "duck meal". Natural Balance has several duck-based formulas, which is a less common meat for dog foods that are high in iron and easier to digest than the standards. Dogs with allergies to chicken or beef often eat duck as an alternate. People also really love that the kibble size is small enough for puppies to easily eat, which is a pro for households with a new pup and a more mature dog sibling.

Margaret Smith is one of many customers on Amazon who gave Natural Balance 5 stars: "We just got a new puppy and needed a puppy food until he's older and can eat what the other dogs do. The puppy loves it, and the kibble size (small to medium) is perfect for our growing puppy (he's about 30 pounds now)."

There are a lot of misconceptions about what you should be feeding your dog, and over the years conventional wisdom surrounding our furry friends has changed. We always recommend putting branding and slogans aside and looking into the ingredients for yourself to determine what's best for your pup. By comparing the ingredients and real customer testimonials (that means you shouldn't be looking at a brand's website, instead check out third-party sites like Customer Affairs) you should come away feeling satisfied that your dog is getting the nutrition they need to live a happy and healthy life.

Now that the ice is finally melting, the birds are chirping, and going outside with my dog, Dakota, without my parka is possible, I feel like a new person. The arrival of Spring has always meant spring cleaning for me and getting rid of everything that doesn't serve my best life. When I was saying goodbye to the ancient peanut butter pretzels at the back of my pantry, I skimmed the ingredients list and saw artificial chemicals and preservatives before I saw peanuts. It was a wake-up call to be more careful about what I put in my body, and Dakota's. She'd eat peanut butter for every meal if she could.

I decided to start spring off right and stay away from anything with artificial preservatives in my next trip to the grocery store, and it was easier than I thought! There are plenty of healthy, organic, natural options for humans. When I went to pick up some more dog food for Dakota, I was shocked to find that's not the case for dogs. Even some of the so-called "healthy" dog food brands still had a ton of dangerous preservatives. I thought there must be better alternatives online, so I did some Googling and that's how I found Ollie. It's a subscription customized dog food brand that uses no preservatives and human-grade meat. I never thought about how dog food companies may use a meat meal or byproduct that your average human would never ingest.

cute boxer puppy

Dakota's a healthy Boxer, but she's getting older, so she tires more easily than she used to. I've also noticed that she seems to get aggressive if she's eating too much sugar. Thankfully, Ollie lets you input everything about your pup to create a customized plan to give your unique dog exactly what they need for a healthy, happy life. When I wrote in that Dakota was healthy, 6 years old, and a lover of beef, they recommended their "Hearty Beef Eats" recipe. The first three ingredients are a human-grade hormone-free beef, beef heart, and beef kidney, from farms in the U.S. The recipe also includes sweet potato, carrot, spinach, blueberries, fish oil, vitamin E, riboflavin, and basil, so I know Dakota is getting a ton of nutritional value from real foods.

The vet-formulated combination of high-quality meat, superfoods, and healthy produce sounded like an ideal way to boost her energy naturally. Ollie delivers dog food right to your door, and you can choose different plans based on how many meals you want to receive a week. I signed up for enough meals to feed Dakota only Ollie because after reading some horror stories about what's really in kibble, I wanted to help get Dakota the real food she deserves. The subscription has ended up being so convenient, I never have to worry about making last minute trips to the pet store when we're low on food.

boxer with ollie food

When the first Ollie box arrived, I swear that diva knew it was for her. I unloaded the meals and gave her dinner earlier than usual because she was so excited. She licked the bowl clean. I was just happy knowing that the food was healthier, but around the second week of eating Ollie, I started seeing a real difference in Dakota. She usually starts getting tired after 30 minutes, but now when we go to the park she stays energized and wants to play for two hours. Plus her coat is super shiny and pretty, which I think is because of all the vitamins. Dakota even made friends with a poodle named Maggie, and now we have regular playdates.

Since eating Ollie, Dakota's healthier, happier, and able to keep up with the big dogs now like she's always wanted to. If you're looking to better your dog's life, check out Ollie.

My dog, Winston, is a refined chocolate Lab but feels the need to destroy every toy I get for him. Same routine: I bring home a toy, he's elated, he shakes it around, tears it up, and the stuffing is all over the floor within a few hours. While I'm on cleanup duty, he heads to his bed to cuddle with the toy's remains. And that's playtime for us.

I asked another Lab owner how she deals with all the chewing and high energy of the breed, and she told me she gets all her toys and treats from BarkBox, which keeps her lab, Roxie occupied for weeks to come. BarkBox sends you a monthly themed package that's filled with all-natural, wholesome treats and well-made toys you can't find anywhere else. When I expressed my concerns about the durability of the toys, Roxie's owner told me about BarkBox's stellar customer service. Their "Happy Team" guarantees satisfaction or a free replacement product through their Scout's Honor program.

I soon discovered how great the service really was. Our first BarkBoxwas themed "Bark to School," which included lunch shaped plush toys inside a Velcro sealed embroidered lunch bag, all natural ham and cheese sandwich snacks, jerky chew sticks, and more natural snacks and toys—all wrapped in adorable doggie yearbook photos! In the midst of our excitement, Winston went straight for the "My Dog Ate My Homework" toy, a squeak toy that looked like an essay with dog bites on the edges.

Now, these toys lasted longer than any Winston had played with before - and more importantly, Winston seems overjoyed every time he plays with the new toys (especially his favorite, Pixel the Penguin, which is one sturdy bird, with its tennis ball head and tough rope body). The team at BarkBox just gets us. They really know their dogs, and they customize each box to your dog's size to ensure he/she will love each item.

Now that Winston's caught on, he can recognize his BarkBox waiting on the step even before we even bring it inside. I say, "Winnie, it's BarkBox time!" and he starts barking and wiggling. We always have a priceless bonding experience over it, plus the adorable themes keep us on our toes each. Considering the quality of the U.S.-and-Canada-made toys, the natural treats he loves, and the customization and friendliness of the service, we're giving BarkBox 2 thumbs (and 2 paws) up.
