Jack Black Has Elevated TikTok to an Artform

Nothing can prepare you for what team Jablinski brings to the TikTok game.

For many elder Millennials — not to mention Gen-Xers and Baby Boomers — TikTok is a mystery.

With the frenetic format, the dance challenges and duets and the non-sequitur audio clips that endlessly recycled, it obviously was not designed for us. It belongs to Gen Z, a generation that was suckled by the surreal alienation of social media and Internet culture — a generation that wants a distilled version of that poison pumped straight into their veins.

Best Ways to See More of Your Favorite K-Pop Idols

Can't get enough K-Pop? Check out these shows.

Most K-Pop stars have carefully curated social media to give fans glimpses into their personal lives, but for some fans those little glimpses will never be enough.

Luckily, you don't need to resort to desperate measures to feel a little closer to your favorite idols. Korean entertainment is a world of endless crossovers, so you can get your fix of idol goodness in a few different ways.

Variety Shows

As anyone who's seen Jack Black's appearance on Infinite Challenge can tell you, Korean variety shows are crazy. We don't really have an equivalent in the U.S., but if you imagine a group of celebrities spending a whole day doing wacky Ellen/Jimmy Fallon games, you should get the idea. While Infinite Challenge is no longer running, it aired from 2005-2018 and regularly featured K-pop idols, along with actors, comedians, and athletes. With that many seasons, they've had a huge number of K-pop guests participating in the craziness, like T.O.P from Big Bang doing a ridiculous dance battle.

A similar show that's still airing is called Running Man, where you get to see members of BTS getting piggyback rides. The show also regularly features members of Bigbang, Blackpink, 2PM, CNBlue, and Miss A. With all the crazy antics that go on in these shows, you get to see more of the silly side of your favorite idols. Another variety show, Village Survival The Eight, has featured Jennie from Blackpink working with other celebrities to solve a fictional mystery. Along with the clips on YouTube, full episodes of these shows can be viewed for free on Rakuten Viki.

As a devoted 80's baby, I'm nostalgic for anything that reminds me of my youth. i Care Bears, TMNT, Slap Bracelets – I remember it all like it was yesterday. So, when I came across an old Muzzy commercial on YouTube, the memories started pouring in. The 80s and 90s spawned a ton of super-memorable commercials, and Muzzy was my personal favorite.

I remembered the big green fuzzy cartoon that taught you how to speak French and how badly I wanted the tapes. It was everywhere in the '90s, and I was over the moon when my parents bought the VHS tapes for my sixth birthday. I was excited because of the fun monster cartoon, but it ended up helping me become bilingual and giving me more opportunities in life.

Muzzy is a language-learning program designed to teach kids a foreign language using animated stories that were developed by the BBC. When I was a kid, I used the Muzzy VHS tapes to learn French and I absolutely loved it. Now I'm a mom, and you can imagine how excited I was when I found out Muzzy is still around in 2020.

Now it's been modernized: the language learning cartoons come as a website subscription that includes interactive bonus materials like movies, games, songs, and worksheets that can teach your child all kinds of concepts from greetings to counting.

The online subscription also includes an online recording studio that lets your child practice pronunciation by hearing themselves aloud. I knew I had to get it for my daughter, so she could learn a second language just like I did.

Because I started at such a young age, learning French became part of my daily life. Muzzy didn't make it feel like learning at all, because they design their stories to teach you a new language the same way you learned your first. Plus it was really fun!

Now I'm bilingual in French and English, and I want my daughter to have all the same opportunities being bilingual gave me -- traveling the world, increased job opportunities, and exposure to a culture that expanded my worldview. And I knew I should start while she's young, while the lessons will have the biggest influence on expanding her cognitive skills and creative abilities.

I decided to get my daughter a Muzzy online subscription so that she can learn Spanish. They have 7 different languages to choose from, but I thought Spanish was a good choice since her father has family in Spain. They have a bunch of different online subscription plans starting at just $5 a month, so teaching my daughter Spanish would cost less per month than a single venti latte at Starbucks.

It's nice to have something to occupy her time other than mindless cartoons or iPad games. Plus, there are countless studies out there that prove there are so many benefits to learning another language at a young age, like improved cognitive functions, creative thinking, and a greater ability to multitask.

When I was a kid, Muzzyalways felt like I was watching a cool tv show, not like I was in school learning something boring. Speaking in French became something fun for me to do. Watching my daughter have fun learning Spanish with Muzzy has been one of the most rewarding things I've done as a parent.

MUSIC MONDAY | School Rules!

09.10.18 | School-Themed Tunes to Hum to in Homeroom

School is back in session making us remember all the songs that make school-themed flicks fun.

Sure, movies are nothing like what we remember school to be like, but why relive our own super-awkward academic days when Hollywood made school glamorous and full of good times?

These ten tunes with school at center stage are full of nostalgia. Grab your backpack and brown bag lunch. Rock and roll down the halls and sing through study hall. Check out these videos and revisit those school days when life was simpler and sentimental. Even if you were a "C-" student, these jams get an A+!

“You’re the One That I Want” – Grease

"I've got chills…" If you never seem to get enough of Danny and Sandy's romance back in the days of cool cars and too-cool-for-school students, "You're the One that I Want" will get you in the mood to watch Grease yet again. Teenage love is always confusing, but when the tunes are as good as the ones from this movie's soundtrack, the awkwardness is somehow amazing.

“Don’t You (Forget About Me)” – Breakfast Club

Forget? How could we?! This tune is all about the '80s and its countless teenage trials and tribulations. "Don't You (Forget About Me)" is not only an awesome song, but makes us think of our high school days and the relationships that helped us through 'till graduation. Molly Ringwald, you are our spirit animal!

“Good Morning Baltimore” – Hairspray

Whether on screen or on stage, Hairspray is full of school-themed theatrics that put music to math and scales to science. "Good Morning Baltimore" is a belt-out beauty, full of the high-energy Hairspray is all about. Big hair, don't care!

“If You Leave” – Pretty in Pink

Pretty in Pink is a classic, from the concept to the characters. We can all relate to the teenage misery and milestones, and "If You Leave" is part of the soundtrack of our lives. High school may not have always been pretty, but "If You Leave" is a beautiful song.

“In Your Eyes” Say Anything

Our hearts are aching. Young love put out there to reveal a raw heart and first-love feelings come to the forefront in that unforgettable Say Anything scene. With a "boom box" blaring and a school boy laying his love on the line, "In Your Eyes" is as clear as a love letter put to lyrics can be.

“Milkshake” – Mean Girls

Mean as the "cool girls" may have been, there's nothing sweeter than a "Milkshake." Lindsay Lohan may be today's "hot mess" but when she starred in the high school flick Mean Girls, she was the cherry on top of a classic high school flick.

“Fame – Remember My Name” – Fame

Most of us went to an average high school where the most activity we saw was playing dodgeball or running around the track. But for the highly-gifted, tremendously talented kids in the flick Fame, singing and dancing made the days at school more like getting ready for the red carpet. "Baby look at me…" We sure are!

“Danke Schoen” – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Oh what fun it must have been to be a fella like Ferris. With no cares in the world and a flair for fun, this cocky character made us all wish we had the chutzpah to cut school and sing "Danke Schoen" on the top of our lungs. You only live once, and Ferris Bueller made every second count.

“Touch Me” – School of Rock

If your school was more "rule book" than "rock," School of Rock was surely a much-loved fantasy of what you wish your school days were like. Jack Black played an unlikely teacher, but he made the students embrace music with more passion than any social studies class could conjure up. So, "Touch Me" (by the Doors) may not seem appropriate for grade school kids, but somehow, School of Rock made it work.

“One Foot in Front of the Other” – Revenge of the Nerds

Nerds! They may have been dorky, but the jocks were taken for a ride by the pocket-protector-clad crew in Revenge of the Nerds. When it comes down to it, "brains" beats "brawn" any day of the week. College is more than parties and playing football. Smarts, sensitivity, and a little savvy got the nerds to the top of the class. Revenge sure is sweet!
