Exclusive Interview: Kim Petras on Pop Escapism & Her New Single "Malibu"

"There's nothing that makes me feel happier than writing a good song."

Kim Petras

Joey James

Kim Petras makes electric dance-pop that will make you feel like you're on a crowded dance floor even in the midst of isolation.

An expert curator of image and imagination, Petras' music lives in a neon space of glamour and ecstasy that seems to exist just a few echelons above our own. At the same time, there's a distinct bittersweetness to her music, a pang just below the surface.

Kim Petras Had the Perfect Response to Transphobic Protesters

The pop star's Kansas City show was visited by members of the Westboro Baptist Church, and she had no room for them.

A Kim Petras concert over the weekend had a few unwelcome guests, so the singer decided to take matters into her own hands with an unbothered sense of humor.

When Petras heard members of the Westboro Baptist Church were planning on protesting her Kansas City show Sunday night, she had the perfect response. She shared a clip on Instagram featuring shots of herself, edited with a news ticker that read "hoes mad" and soundtracked to Famous Dex's trap beat banger of the same name. "This is my official statement on wbc picketing my show in Kansas City tomorrow," Petras captioned the post. "This is the energy i'm bringing n it should be yours too."

But that stroke of genius wasn't the end of it. On the night of the show, as WBC protesters were posted up outside of the venue, Petras continued exemplifying her badassery by posing in front of them while clad in a black bodysuit and thigh-high boots, butt out and all. WBC is infamous for their use of excessive hate speech, and they often target the LGBT+ community and use dehumanizing slurs (Petras started gaining media attention as a teenager when she became one of the youngest people in her home country of Germany to undergo gender reassignment surgery).

Fellow stars like Charli XCX, Slayyyter, Demi Lovato, Tinashe, Madison Beer, and Grimes commented on Petras' posts to share their support and adoration. Petras has no room for homophobia at her shows; to put it in her own words, anti-gay protesters are "not on her TRANSgenda today."

Popdust's Spooktacular Halloween Playlist

Are you tasked with hosting a Halloween party this year? Let us help you with the music.

Howl you doing boys and girls? What's up, my witches?

Spooky season is drawing nearer, and with Halloween falling on a Thursday this year, it means that there is only one weekend to curate a spooktacular party playlist, and one opportunity to throw a fa-boo-lous Halloween party. It is no easy task, but if you want your guests to shake their BOOty, eat, drink, and be scary all night long, Popdust has just the playlist that will give your friends pumpkin' to talk about.

Itsy Bitsy Spider by Carly Simon

Have you ever heard such an elegant and moving interpretation of this spooky nursery rhyme? In this version, I wasn't rooting for the rain to "wash the spider out"; instead, Simon's mash up of the nursery rhyme with her hit "Comin Around Again" paints a darker picture. "I know nothing stays the same, but if you're willing to play the game, it's coming around again," Simon sings. The Spider's journey is a complex one: He is tenacious in his dream of scaling the water spout and is an inspiration to us all. "Nothing stays the same," little Spider, keep climbing. One day, you may just turn your dream into a reality. It's a reminder of our mortality and serves as the perfect song to kick off the night as your guests eat hors d'oeuvres and pour their first cup of spiked punch.
