What to Watch at SXSW 2024

Films We Are Most Excited To See at South By Southwest 2024

All the cool film girlies just came back from Berlin. Specifically, they are fresh from the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, and they still smell like cigarettes to prove it. Between anecdotes about how Berghain is ruined, they’re telling me how they watched Cillian Murphy (my father, emotionally) give another masterful, award-worthy performance in the Enda Walsh adaptation of Claire Keegan’s novel Small Things Like These. This is apropos of nothing, except that I was not in Berlin, so I will have to wait alongside everyone else to see one of my favorite books on screen later this year.

But how can I be bitter? This week, half of Los Angeles will flock to Texas for South By Southwest in Austin, and I’ll be delightfully distracted by a whole new slate of upcoming releases premiering at this year’s festival. There are so many new films to be excited about premiering at the festival — even without Cillian Murphy’s cheekbones.

Let’s get into it.

Genovia Forever: Anne Hathaway Confirms Princess Diaries 3

The princess herself has confirmed her upcoming return to Genovia, alongside Julie Andrews.

The royals are back.

After a fifteen-year-long absence, Anne Hathaway has confirmed that she'll be returning to Genovia, reprising her role as Mia Thermopolis, everyone's favorite princess-next-door. Yes, Princess Diaries Number 3 is really happening.

Hathaway dropped the news on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, announcing that "there is a script for the third movie," making everyone who's ever been nostalgic for the early 2000s very, very happy. The ever-elegant Dame Julie Andrews will be returning as well to reprise her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, and producer Debra Martin Chase has also committed to the project.

The first film was released in 2001, and Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement came out in 2004. Director Garry Marshall had expressed interest in a third, but tragically died in 2016 at age 81. Julie Andrews told BuzzFeed News in 2017 that "we might do [a third film] in honor of him."

Following this, the films experienced a bit of a cultural resurgence, with many fans drawing parallels between Mia's story and the newly royal Meghan Markle's.

Markle is one of the many inspiring and determinedly authentic women who have, like Mia, experienced sudden rises to the spotlight recently. In an era that seems primed for female leadership, Princess Diaries seems like the perfect fit, as it has been lauded for its independent female characters and its central message: stay true to yourself.

The film's release date is still TBA. Hathaway told Cohen that "We all really want [the film] to happen, it's just we don't want to do it unless it's perfect." A queen is never late; everyone else is simply early. We wouldn't expect anything less from Hollywood's favorite nonexistent country and its iconic commander-in-chief.

Eden Arielle Gordon is a writer and musician from New York City. She enjoys coffee, electric guitars, and subway rides to Coney Island.

Mile 22

A new summertime thriller, we follow the story of an operative in one of the least understood units of the CIA (though it is highly regarded). With the help of his top-notch team, this agent must retrieve and transport an asset that holds life-threatening information to Mile 22 for extraction before the enemy closes in.

The Little Mermaid

This is not the Disney version of the film that most of you know. It is instead based on the Hans Christian Andersen original tale, which is just a tad darker. A reporter and his niece discover a magnificent creature in the water and come to believe it is a mermaid. Get ready to dive into something magical.

Yes, on the surface this looks like a film about a bunch of jerky white men in nice suits. When you dig deeper you will find something based on the true story of a group of young men who are as charming and intelligent as they look, but after a get-rich-quick scheme goes horribly wrong, they have a bit of blood tarnishing their reputations.
