Beyoncé Brings Afrobeats to Mainstream Audiences with "Lion King: The Gift"

"Lion King: The Gift" may be a Beyoncé album, but she's not the standout in her own collaborative production.

Beyoncé in all her glory.

Columbia Records

Beyoncé's Lion King: The Gift is in direct competition with the live-action remake's 2019 soundtrack.

It's difficult to imagine Disney allowing any other artist to challenge the success of their latest production, but Beyoncé has surpassed celebrity—she is a movement, an icon, and a spokesperson for a generation, and her name being associated with the movie can only mean good things for the company, even if her Lion King-inspired album is separate from the movie in which she stars. After all, Disney's remakes have received criticism from the get-go. What was the need for a live-action remake of a movie conceived by a bunch of white executives who referred to the project as "Bambi in Africa?"

Still, Beyoncé's involvement loaned the project credibility, and clearly the artist saw the potential to reclaim the Africa-set narrative to create what she calls "sonic cinema." She worked with "some of her favorite artists [and] the most talented and important African artists of the day to both pay tribute to the iconic film and bring the authentic sounds of African music to the world." Although how authentically and accurately the star's achieved this goal is up for debate, there's no question that Beyoncé was able to use her influence to shine a spotlight on the diverse range of artists, some who even outshine her.

The album begins with James Earl Jones, backed by a soft violin, repeating Mufasa's iconic lines to Simba: "Everything you see exists together in a delicate balance. You need to understand that balance and respect all the creatures. From the crawling ant to the leaping antelope. We're all connected in the great circle of life." This sentiment, that all African people are connected, is emphasized throughout the rest of the album. The interlude is followed by "BIGGER," Beyoncé's lyrical build up to the message,"If you feel insignificant, you better think again / Better wake up because you're apart of something way bigger." It's another reminder that every person is connected to each other and to the earth.

Columbia

Another poignant interlude spoken by James Earl Jones introduces "FIND YOUR WAY BACK," an R&B, Afrobeat version of Lemonade's "Daddy Issues." Unlike the original, "FIND YOUR WAY BACK" is a filler song with an infectious beat—it seems to exist just to add to the story of The Lion King. It has nothing on the songs that follow: Tekno, Yemi Alade, Mr Eazi, and Lord Afrixana's "DON'T JEALOUS ME" and Burna Boy's "JA ARA E." Both tracks are danceable but in distinctly different ways. The gritty and visceral "DON'T JEALOUS ME" produces a teeth-clenching, head-bouncing effect—it's captivating and mystifying, while "JA ARA E" is a hip-swinging, sexy summer anthem.

The Nigerian Afro-fusion artists highlight exactly what the Western world is missing out on, musically. The variety and simple good vibes could create a cultural moment for Afro-fusion in Western mainstream music, similar to what "Despacito" did or Latin Pop (minus Justin Bieber, thankfully).

Columbia

Next, "NILE" and "MOOD 4EVA" keep the album's soulful momentum going, despite the many interludes beginning to bog down the bops. Kendrick Lamar's classic rap delivery on "NILE" sets up another one of his iconic beat-drops. But, in the last thirty seconds of the track, Beyoncé's textured vocals end too quickly, making "NILE" feel incomplete. "MOOD 4EVA" captures all that was successful about The Carter's EVERYTHING IS LOVE album. Beyoncé's voracious performance and enchanting, oozing confidence outperform Jay-Z's. Beyoncé outdoes him with lyrics like, "Piña colada-in' / you stay Ramada Inn," and concluding with, "I be like soul food / I am a whole mood." Unfortunately, the song's low-point is Childish Gambino's feature, which only makes a minor contribution to the already electrifying mood.

At the album's halfway mark, the majority of the noteworthy tracks have already passed. "BROWN SKIN GIRL" and "MY POWER" are the only tracks left that stick in the mind of listeners. The sweet-natured, empowering "BROWN SKIN GIRL" begins with Blue Ivy Carter's first singing performance. Then Nigerian artist WizKid aids the celebratory track, which speaks directly to the brown skin girls of the world. The song separates itself from the rest of the album as an easier, mellower, lullaby-inspired song, while still positioning black people at the center of the celebration.

Columbia

Conversely, up-and-coming rapper, Tierra Whack, leads "MY POWER" with the declaration, "They'll never take my power / They feel a way, oh wow"—celebrating all black women and what they're capable of. On the track, South African artists—Moonchild Sanelly and Busiswe—gloriously sing African praises, injecting the song with an emboldened, unwavering verse.

The rest of the album has its individual, exceptional moments, like Beyoncé's almost holy vocals on "OTHERSIDE" and Jessie Reyez's ingenious verse on "SCAR." But, still, only six out of the fourteen main tracks succeed in creating something new, inspiring, and other-worldly. The other interludes strip Lion King: The Gift of cohesion and flow. But still, with The Lion King: The Gift, Beyoncé has cemented her legacy of celebrating black experiences and art by bringing African musical influences to Western, mainstream audiences. If there was any doubt left that Beyoncé is more than just an indomitable vocalist, surely it's been dispelled once and for all by this album. Lion King: The Gift demonstrates what is possible when collaboration occurs across borders to create cross-cultural, truly globalized music.

Beyoncé has never been one to stick to tradition or to announce when she's about to drop something, so it's really no surprise that she just released a 40-track live album called Homecoming in conjunction with her new Netflix documentary.

Homecoming: A Film By Beyoncé | Official Trailer | Netflixwww.youtube.com

The album, which dropped at 10 AM on Wednesday morning, is a collection of the singer's greatest hits, ranging from "Single Ladies" to Destiny's Child's "Say My Name." It also includes rarities such as two covers of the hymn often called the Black national anthem—"Lift Every Voice and Sing"—first sung a cappella by an emotional Beyoncé as a lead-in to "Formation," and later by Bey and Jay-Z's daughter, Blue Ivy.

Blue, who recorded the track in the audience at one of her mom's rehearsals, has obviously inherited some of her parents' love of the spotlight; at the end of the song she exclaims, "I wanna do that again because it feels good!"

B7 also features Jay-Z and J Balvin and concludes with a new studio track—a cover of the song "Before I Let Go" by Frankie Beverly and Maze, originally released in 1981 and first covered by Destiny's Child in 1997.

As if the album alone wasn't enough of a gift, it's available on all streaming platforms. On it, you can hear Beyoncé's vocals—silky and flawless as ever—layered over complicated new brass-heavy arrangements and the distant screams of the infatuated crowd. Supercharged with electric energy, it's a straight shot of the empowerment and magnetism that has gained Beyoncé her well-deserved status as an inimitable icon of our times.

The album comes as a surprise companion piece to Beyoncé's Netflix documentary, which debuted last night at Howard University and Houston's Southern Texas University—appropriate venues, as her Coachella performance featured a massive marching band and sets inspired by the aesthetics of historically black colleges. It follows her 2018 performance from conceptualization to fruition and features interviews and intimate behind-the-scenes footage.

The critically lauded set marked the first time in the festival's 11-year history that an African American woman headlined it, and 2018 will forever be marked in history as the year of Beychella. But then again, every year is Bey's year—she's been steadily creating extraordinary multimedia works of art for the past decade, with each event—from the Super Bowl to Lemonade—further fortifying her legacy as music's eternal queen, one surprise release at a time.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z Renew Their Wedding Vows

Wishing the couple a happy 10th anniversary!

Can you believe Beyoncé and Jay-Z have been happily (for the most part) hitched for ten years? Time sure files when you're fabulous. And to celebrate the marital milestone, The Carters chose to renew their wedding vows. After sipping some sour Lemonade and drowning out chatter about cheating over the years, the couple has stayed strong and they kept their "for better or for worse" vows close to their hearts. As for the "for richer or for poorer" part? That wasn't really going to pose a problem.

So, here there are. Ten years, three children, and a long-lasting love that keeps on keepin' on. And just before Queen Bey celebrated her 37th, she partied with her king, celebrating their 10th anniversary in an extra-special way by making it official another time around.

Beyoncé posted about her joy on her website. "At 36, I became a new mother of three. I breastfed my twins. I renewed my vows with my husband of 10 years…" Seems like Beyoncé is bringing in 37 with a huge helping of happiness. A family she cherishes, a career that's on fire, and a flock of fans who are always buzzing for Bey.

As per Us Weekly, "Fans began speculating about a secret vow renewal when the 'Apes–t' collaborators kicked off their On the Run II tourOpens a New Window. in the U.K. on June 6. Their concert ended with a montage of home videos, including one of the couple facing each other and bowing their heads during what appeared to be an intimate ceremony with their three children present. Beyoncé looked stunning in a strapless white gown, while Jay-Z, 48, wore a white suit. The scene ended with the message: 'This is real love.'"

So much for a "secret." We all know the Carters are keen on keeping their fans on their toes, yet their moves are always meticulously mapped out. But when it comes to their personal relationship, keeping it real is what this couple is all about. Gossip always goes around – especially when it comes to celebs - but these two stay grounded. Their recent renewal ceremony only proves they are together, on the same team, and still tight.

Will we see Beyoncé and her boo make it to the 20-year mark? And will they continue to expand their fabulous family? Time will tell, but 'till then, we hope the couple remains "Crazy in Love."

Happy Birthday Beyoncé!

At 37, The Singer is as Hot as the Candles on Her Cake – Her 10 Best Looks

For Beyoncé, looking great is a piece of (birthday) cake!

If fans of Beyoncé need another excuse to celebrate the celeb, how 'bout a big birthday cheer for the never-better Bey? She's 37-years-old today, making music, "mini-mes," and millions.

Aside from her talent, we love how Beyoncé always looks beautiful. Her look is one-of-a-kind and her fashion sense is fierce. What better way to wish Queen Bey a happy Bey-day than to give a well-deserved shout out to her stellar style? Popdust's picks for Beyoncé's top 10 fashion moments will remind us all that 37 has never looked better.

Pregnant Princess

She may be known as Queen Bey, but this bronzed beauty was every bit a pregnant princess deserving of her ridiculously royal crown. Glowing with that mom-to-be radiance, Beyoncé was giving us a bedazzled bump that was far better than a disco ball.

A View from Behind

A train like this deserves a grand entrance. As Beyoncé climbs the red-carpeted stairs, all eyes are on her backside…but for good reason. That sheer dress with a train for days is a fashion moment we're glad we didn't miss. Talk about a caboose!

Here Comes the Beyoncé

Looking bridal and beautiful, this wedding gown inspired stage costume gives "I do" a whole new meaning. This dress may not be right for walking down the aisle, but when Bey's on stage, anything goes. "Put a ring on it?" Don't mind if we do.

Daisy Dukes

Sporty-meets-sexy when Beyoncé gives us legs for days and a sultry gaze. Yellow is perfect for the "Lemonade" singer who loves to balance out her sweet side with some sass.

Pause for a Flashback Video with Destiny's Child

"Say My Name"

Wet and Wild

The "wet look" hairdo paired with an outfit that's as hot as the woman in it makes Beyoncé look every bit the total package. Hand on hip and standing tall, anyone can tell that "Sasha" is, indeed, fierce.

Lady in Lace

Another concert look that turned heads, this little lace number showed off all of Bey's curves in all the right places. Toned, trim, and taking us under her spell, we're living for this lady in lace.

How 'Bout Going APES**T?

"APES**T"

Dazzling and Daring

Here with her hubby, Beyoncé is bright and "blingy," showing lots of skin and tons of sparkle. While her man looks dapper, Bey steals the show with a mega-watt wardrobe and a smile to match.

Form-Fitted Fabulosity

Posing for the paparazzi, Beyoncé looks like she was poured into this gown like a fine glass of wine. Every detail is pure perfection, from the sheen of the fabric to the intricate appliques. With a body like hers, any stylist would be silly not to dress this diva.

Lady in Red

Another pregnant pic of the dazzling diva. Here, she's not only showing off an impressive bump, but two awards to match. Like Dorothy's ruby red slippers, Beyoncé shows us why sequins and sparkle make any look lovelier. Always a winner, here Bey proves it with her well-deserved Grammys.

Ice, Ice, Baby

Feathers for fashion may not be an everyday look, but for Beyoncé, every moment is her time to shine. Looking cool in an ice blue gown, Bey gives us step-and-repeat style only she could pull off without a hitch. Bey in baby blue is simply the best.

Kamikaze Just Dropped

RIP Aretha

From Pablo to Pornhub - Kanye in Talks to Collab with the XXX Site

August 20 is the big day. Admittedly, it's my birthday, but for the rest of the world, or at least for music lovers who are interested, the 20th marks the MTV Video Music Awards which will be held at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. The show is always full of entertaining acts, stunning costumes and red carpet ensembles, and a gathering of the best in the biz, many of whom are in attendance not only to watch their peers perform but to possibly snatch up an award to make the summer of '18 even more special.

And speaking of special, for new mom Cardi B, this year just keeps getting better. She's in a happy relationship with hubby Offset, who she secretly wed last fall, and just gave birth to her first child on July 10th. For most people, that would be enough to call the past year a success, but Cardi B is on top of the world and her personal life is only part of what makes her shine. She is leading the nominations with a total of 10, beating out Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

Surely Cardi B will take home something, perhaps not all 10 awards but the odds are in her favor to not go home empty handed. As for the rest of the noms? Check out who is in the running in their respective categories below. And you can chime in. As per ET, "Fans can vote in eight of the most popular categories via vma.mtv.com up until Friday, Aug. 10. Voting for the "Best New Artist" category will stay open until the live broadcast."
