Hear Ingrid Michaelson's New Stranger-Things Inspired Single, "Missing You"

Ingrid Michaelson has released the first track off of her 'Stranger Things'-inspired album, along with a Pac Man-themed lyric video.

Does Netflix's Stranger Things make you feel like you're wrapped in a blanket of sweet memories of the 1980s suburban youth you never had?

You're not alone—Ingrid Michaelson feels the same way, and she's written a whole album about it.

Today, Michaelson released the first track off of her Stranger Things-inspired LP, Stranger Songs. "Missing You" borrows muffled synth-driven arpeggiations from the show's theme music, and layers her crystal-clear vocal tones high above them.

Lyrically, the song—which is a reference to the character Nancy and her fraught love triangle with moody dreamboat Jonathan and popular, pure-hearted Steve—offers the kind of complex portrayal of romantic tension that Michaelson has always been an expert at painting in her music. "When he's kissing me I'm missing you," she sings. "I'm in his bed feeling like a stranger."

With its 80s-style beat and grainy bassline, "Missing You" is a euphoric and sugar-sweet song that could easily soundtrack a triumphant bike ride in a Stranger Things final scene, just after Eleven has returned to sweep Mike off his feet and save all of Hawkins.

Michaelson's music has received widespread critical success; two of her singles have gone platinum, and all seven of her albums were released on her own record label, Cabin 24. But after the release of her last album, she found herself seeking inspiration—and discovered it unexpectedly in Netflix's smash-hit show about parallel dimensions and glowing Christmas lights.

All in all, her music is a natural match for Stranger Things' softly lit nostalgia. "I've already made seven records, I have a lot to say. But I've said it so much from the brain and mind and soul of Ingrid Michaelson—I wanted to create something through a different lens," the musician stated. "There's something about Stranger Things that's really comforting, it brings me back to my childhood. It's the best kind of escapism and I find myself seeking that now more than ever. I took inspiration from the show and the characters and all these ideas started to come to me. Every song on the record includes a reference from the show, some more specific than others, but all of the themes are universal—these are feelings everyone has."

Regarding her love of the show, she told Entertainment Weekly, "I've always longed to re-live childhood memories. There's no word in the English language to describe what it is that I'm feeling. But it goes deeper than nostalgia — this desire to quite literally be able to go back in time and re-live those moments again because the memories are so wonderful and wrap you up with a warm feeling."

Stranger Things isn't the only beloved work of escapism that Michaelson will be lending her ear and lyrical sensibilities to in the near future. She has also written the score for a musical adaption of The Notebook, and the first performances will debut in Poughkeepsie, New York this July at Vassar College (the same place Lin-Manuel Miranda debuted his Hamilton Mixtape way back in 2013).

Both The Notebook and Stranger Things are portals into magical, dreamlike worlds of passion, nostalgia, and parallel dimensions. With her penchant for spinning reality into perfect rhymes and whimsical melodies, Michaelson seems like one of the best people around to turn both of them into song.

Every female pop singer owes, in part, their success to the work of Mariah Carey. It's not an opinion: it's fact. When the Queen of Modern Pop first hit the scene in the early '90s, she set the bar high for every wannabe-diva that came after. During Carey's appearance on The Today Show's Summer Concert Series on Friday (May 16), the curvy singer debuted a brand new song called "You Don't Know What To Do" (featuring Wale), co-written by Carey, Jermaine Dupri, Bryan Michael Cox, Wale, Patrick Adams and Terri Gonzalez.

The consummate diva also performed two of her most well-known hits, "Touch My Body" and "Always Be My Baby," during which she messed up the words."Messing up the words of my own song," Carey giggled, in place of the real words, "and I don't care."

Carey's forthcoming album, Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse, arrives May 27. Earlier this week, the Queen also debuted a bumpin' "Thirsty" track, a collaboration with Atlanta rapper Homie Quan. Miley Cyrus sure has a knack for creating awkward sexual tension with men old enough to be her father, doesn't she?

On this morning's TODAY, Matt Lauer interviewed the lady of the hour about, duh, the VMAs—which he referred to as a "strategic hot mess"—and Miley's provocative behavior in general. What ensued was the sort of flirting anyone hopes for after a couple drinks. Here are some snippets.


MATT: I'm never going to go to a sporting game and see a foam finger--

MILEY: Without doing getting up and doing this to it (mimes a sexual grind)?

MATT: Well, I'll be thinking about it.

The both giggle.


MATT: The naked shot on the wrecking ball for the video, it's very clear you are navigating--"

MILEY: That also you can't help but every time you go by a wrecking ball you just wanna get naked and hop on top of it?

MATT: Luckily I don't pass wrecking balls very often.

They both giggle.


MATT asks how long she plans to keep up the sexy act.

MILEY: Well I heard when you turn 40, things start to get less sexual. I heard that's when you don't have sex anymore.

MATT: Do you know how old I am?

MILEY: I'm gonna guess 40.

MATT: I love you.



You've gotta watch the video to get a full sense of just how uncomfortably flirty it was.

There's not much of Maroon 5 on Maroon 5's Overexposed; the album comes off like the recording studio forbade bands from playing their instruments lest they sully the mix with grit or unpredictability. Lead single "Payphone" sounds like it came about from the crew playing some ill-fated spinoff of Rock Band where the idea was to mimic the MIDI guide tracks as closely as possible, and follow-up "One More Night" might as well be Adam Levine trying to sneak a cry for help through the Swedish-reggae machine of "All That She Wants": "I'll be waking up in the morning probably hating myself / and I'll be waking up feeling satisfied but guilty as hell." And it isn't even bad.

It's no surprise, then, that when it comes time to perform these things on the Today Show, plus spiritual precursor and superbug-of-an-earworm "Moves Like Jagger," it ends up being Adam Levine singing while the rest of the band sort of just stands around. You know how, when there's a movie ostensibly about musicians except nobody in front of the camera knows how to play guitar and nobody behind it knows how to work a hand double, they'll just get the actors to wave their hands over their instruments like they're using a motion-activated paper-towel dispenser? If the band played any less, this would be exactly that. You suspect "Harder to Breathe" was thrown in just to give the poor guys something to do.
