Why I Traded My APEC for a Smarter RO System

Why I Traded My APEC for a Smarter RO System

Editor’s Note: I never used to think twice about our tap water. Then we had our daughter, and I fell down the rabbit hole every new parent eventually finds – PFAS, lead from old pipes, microplastics, and everything else I’d never thought to worry about before. I landed on an APEC reverse osmosis system, which served us for a while. But after switching to the Cloud RO, I don’t see us ever going back. Here’s how it happened.

Our APEC RO Experience:

I chose the APEC ROES-50 for good reason. It’s a proper reverse osmosis system, not a pitcher or a fridge filter, with five stages, NSF certified (372 and 58), and a quick under the sink installation. For a first-time parent trying to do the responsible thing on a budget, it checked the boxes. Reverse osmosis is the gold standard for pulling the widest range of contaminants out of tap water, and APEC does that job.

For a while, it was fine. The water tasted a little flat and plain, but we had cleaner water for drinking, cooking, and filling bottles.

Over time, little frustrations added up. The fill rate was slow – you’d wait to fill a bottle. The system quietly sends several gallons of water down the drain for every gallon it purifies, which started to bug me once I noticed it on the bill.

And honestly, the biggest frustration was the uncertainty. Was it still working properly? I had no way of knowing. Without a readout or sensors, I was basically relying on trust and a calendar reminder to tell me when the filters needed changing.

Then I discovered Cloud RO:

I first heard about Cloud in a new parents group, and what caught my eye immediately was the app and its real-time tracking. Cloud is a smart, connected RO system with sensors at three stages – your incoming tap water, the water after purification, and the water after remineralization.

A few other things convinced me. Cloud removes up to 99% of contaminants (lead, PFAS, microplastics, fluoride, pesticides, chlorine), and it’s also NSF 58 certified, so the performance is independently verified.

Unlike traditional systems that waste water at a 4:1 ratio, Cloud operates at roughly a 1:1 ratio. And it adds minerals back into the water after filtering, which standard systems like my APEC don’t do. Deep purification and better-tasting water felt like the best of both worlds. We decided to try it.

Our life with Cloud RO:

Here’s why Cloud has been such an upgrade for us.

My APEC was a solid traditional RO setup, but it was a black box. Water went in, water came out, and I had to take it on faith that it was clean. Cloud offers total transparency. The app tracks water quality and filter life. I can open my phone and confirm the water I’m mixing into a bottle is actually purified. That visibility alone is the single biggest difference, especially for busy parents.

Cloud’s faster flow rate means purified water is ready when you need it. When you’ve got a crying baby and a bottle to make, this matters a lot. Plus, knowing we’re not pouring several gallons down the drain for every clean one is better for the water bill and better for how I feel about running it all day.

The app tells me when a filter change is actually needed based on usage, so I’m not swapping filters early for no reason. Swapping them takes about five minutes – no tools, no electrical work, no wrestling under the sink.

Most importantly, our water tastes clean and fresh now. Cloud adds calcium, magnesium, potassium, and trace minerals back in, bringing the pH up to around 8–9. That flat taste I’d gotten used to is gone, and the ice is clearer too.

Final Thoughts:

At $599, the Cloud RO is the more expensive option. But more than any single feature, Cloud gives me peace of mind. And that makes the upgrade 100% worth it.

In a home where we’re trying to be thoughtful about what we bring in, being able to see, in real time, that our water is actually being purified has made a big difference. The fact it tastes good enough that everyone drinks more of it makes it one of the best swaps we’ve made.

The APEC is a solid option, but Cloud is what I wish I’d found first.
