Why Shudder is the Premier Streaming Service for Horror SuperFans
As a total horror fanatic, I love mining streaming services for all the scariest movies and shows I can find. The problem is–most of these have a very limited selection or don’t have the horror films my friends and I really love to watch, like gore or slasher movies. Which is why I sometimes resort to downloading films illegally, and have to deal with with ads or risk computer viruses that come with the territory. Personally, I’d rather have a safer and more reliable way to stream movies, but I never knew where to look. So I turned to one of my favorite fan-sites, Bloody Disgusting, which is how I found out about Shudder, a niche, on-demand streaming service that’s specifically made for horror nerds like me.
Shudder features horror, thriller, suspense, paranormal, and supernatural movies and series for every kind of enthusiast. I came across numerous discussion boards rave about the service, but when I heard Elijah Wood sing its praises on Twitter, I knew it was definitely worth a shot. I was a huge fan of Wood in the horror series, The Core, and was curious to see what else Shudder had to offer.
I downloaded the Shudder app on my AppleTV, and immediately understood why so many SuperFans were flocking to sign up. There’s a vast collection of horror films and series to stream, including exclusive originals I wouldn’t have been able to find anywhere else. There were also tons of horror legends that I’d heard of, but never knew where to find, like Dario Argento’s Inferno. The titles are broken up by sub-genre, so you can focus on super specific categories like “creature features” or “cult classics.” Or, you can browse the site’s extensive collections, many of which are curated by horror filmmakers and actors. Since I’m already well-versed in the American genre, I was especially drawn to the foreign film collections. I dove in head-first to a collection called “Nordic Night,” where I found some of the most original noir, slashers, and vampire films I’ve seen in a while.
One of the coolest features of Shudder is that it’s geared towards creating a fan community. Their weekly newsletter “The Bite” always gives me new ideas for what to watch, and since they’re always adding new content and collections, I don’t feel like I’ll ever run out of new material to watch and discuss on message boards. But you don’t have to be an expert in horror to subscribe. Even some of my friends who shy away from hardcore gore have found something new and interesting to watch, whether it’s a slasher comedy or a paranormal suspense. With thousands of titles, they have something that appeals to every kind of viewer, whether you’re a true aficionado or a casual fan.
For just $3.99/month, I have access to more horror films than ever before, and I can feel good about the fact that I don’t have to scour Reddit to find out which illegal streaming sites haven’t been shut down yet. For all my fellow SuperFans out there who have already seen the best that other streaming services have to offer, there’s still more out there to discover thanks to Shudder’s seemingly endless collection.
