"Sexy Beasts" Blends "Bojack Horseman" With Your Nightmares

You know that stress dream where you're out on a date and you suddenly become aware of something deeply embarrassing?
Maybe that fake tooth you got after a bike accident when you were 12 just finally fell out. Or maybe you forgot to wear pants. Or maybe your head has been replaced by a dolphin's.
And though you're almost overwhelmed by the awful spectacle you're making of yourself — and other people are looking — your date barely seems to register that there's anything unusual about your appearance. And then you realize why — he's not right either.
A set of mandibles surrounds his mouth, and two wriggling antenae extend from his forehead between bulging, unblinking eyes the size of grapefruits. You're on a date with a man who's half-mantis, and there are cameras tracking your every move...
Sexy Beasts is a new dating show where real-life singles sport elaborate makeup and prosthetics to put true blind-d… https://t.co/CIMjizdROt— Netflix (@Netflix) 1624449602.0
That's Sexy Beasts. Without context, you might confuse the footage of creature-people on awkward first dates for a live-action remake of Bojack Horseman, or a surprisingly light-hearted sequel to The Island of Dr. Moreau, but no.
In reality, the geniuses over at Netflix have just discovered a way to make blind dates even more awkward and uncomfortable by adding several pounds of Hollywood prosthetics. Because what better way to get to know someone than to spend three hours having strangers apply body paint and attach distracting, sweaty bits of foam and plastic to your face first?
Netflix is marketing the show as a cross between The Masked Singer and Love Is Blind, but that's selling the weirdness way too short. Unlike Love Is Blind, contestants aren't sealed off from each other; but rather they're transformed into grotesque monsters — a shark-lady, a devil, a were-beaver, a baboon-man — and asked to fall in love with each other.
And unlike The Masked Singer, contestants have to handle the awkwardness of a first kiss with the added challenge of dodging each other's massive, furry snouts... Actually that sounds pretty standard.
Anyway, seeing freakish chimera's go bowling, ride roller coasters, and eat at fancy restaurants in a convoluted courtship ritual is definitely tempting enough that we'll be sure to check out Sexy Beasts when it airs on July 21st. And after the gimmick wears off by episode two... we'll keep watching to figure out which of the weirdos is maybe a little too comfortable making out with a panda...
