Leon Bridges and Khruangbin: Texas's Sun-Drenched Dream Team

There's something particularly satisfying about seeing incredibly talented artists collaborate with each other.

Today, an unexpected but beautiful collaboration entered soundwaves when Leon Bridges and Khruangbin announced their forthcoming joint EP and dropped their first single.

Khruangbin is a group inspired by '60s and '70s Thai rock, borrowing from psychedelia, funk, surf rock, and Zouk, Indian, and Middle Eastern music. Leon Bridges is a soul singer-songwriter who also draws from '50s and '60s styles, but the two artist's music is most similar in terms of its emotional resonance and peaceful, expansive atmosphere.

They're also tied together by shared roots: Both groups are from Texas, which might explain their connection. There's no question that their forthcoming EP's lead single—called "Texas Sun"—is inspired by their homeland.

Cinematic and distinctly evocative of the desert landscape, "Texas Sun" feels like it could easily soundtrack the next dreamy Western or Americana masterpiece. Centering Bridges' weather-worn voice and Khruangbin's distinct beachy, reverb-soaked guitars, it's a masterful melding of talents.

Their EP, also called Texas Sun, will be released on February 7th, via Dead Oceans and Columbia Records. It will consist of four tracks, "Texas Sun," "Midnight," "C-Side," and "Conversion."

Miami Horror Releases New Single "Luv Is Not Enough"

The Australian electro-funk group releases a funk-inflected new single with shimmering vocals from Clear Mortifee.

Australian outfit Miami Horror returns today with "Luv Is Not Enough," a refreshing modern groove.

"I finally know myself," featured vocalist Clear Mortifee sings in the song's opening moments, and the track brims with promise from there. The funk and disco-laden sound on "Luv Is Not Enough" is familiar territory for Miami Horror, who've made a career out of marrying electronic sensibility to a funk edge. The new single off the group's upcoming third album makes the most of this marriage. The song's infectious energy alone is more than enough to keep a listener enchanted.

A hearty drum and airy synths provide a solid backdrop for the song's flashier elements, Mortifee's voice, and the dazzling guitar work. The nostalgic track is made ethereal with the pluck and strum of the guitar and its consistent bassy hum. Mortifee's performance is coolly assured, highlighting dreamy lyrics. "Love is not enough, girl / I just need more," they trill on the spinning hook. That's the kind of line that can fade into the music, but when sung by Mortifee it perfectly captures Miami Horror's sound of freedom.

Amo Amo Offers a Vinyl Sound in a Streaming World

The band's debut album blends classic songwriting with stripped-down production for a refreshingly vintage LP.

What happens when a talented group of songwriters and musicians teams up with the front-man of My Morning Jacket for their debut full-length album?

Amo Amo happens. The band's eponymous debut is a well-crafted collection of groovy dream pop, but they don't allow themselves to get too wrapped up in the constraints of genre. The band is truly unbridled on their freshman effort, freely and gracefully weaving through an eclectic list of influences, resulting in a sound that is as unique as it is fun and infectious. The eight songs of this release show that Amo Amo is not a band that will allow themselves to be put in a box.

Come for the dream pop ambiance (expertly produced by the veteran of ethereal rock, My Morning Jacket's Jim James) stay for the jam band vibe and solos, funky guitar licks and bass lines, retro soul harmonies, and timeless songwriting. Much of this album sounds like something from another era – oscillating between the '60s, '70s, and '80s. Part of this can be attributed to the sparse and stripped-down, somewhat lo-fi quality of the production, but much of this vintage sound comes from the songwriting itself. It is almost entirely organic, save for a couple of synths layered into the mix here and there.

Amo Amo is not feeding into the trend of heavy sampling, auto-tuned vocals, big electronic drums, or 808 basses that pervade pop music today. They are making modern music the old-fashioned way – with nothing more than a bass, a guitar, a keyboard, a drum set, and a few microphones. This album was made for vinyl.

The band's self-titled debut album comes out on April 26. If you like what you hear, you can catch Amo Amo on tour this summer.
