Editor’s Note: As a personal development editor, my first thoughts—I hate to admit it—on Grammarly were that it’s a service that’s irrelevant to people in my industry. I viewed it as a glorified version of traditional spell-check. But, boy, let me tell you how wrong I was.

Of course, I’ve always used Microsoft Word’s spell-check and grammar functions when proofing my writing. It’s a nice tool to use if any misspellings slip through the cracks.

As someone who eagerly assumed a writing career, I never thought to use any other resource until one of the interns told me about Grammarly. Grammarly checks grammar and punctuation, catches run-on sentences, offers suggestions for clarity and conciseness—and yes, it spellchecks.

Unlike most spell-checks, the features don't stop there. Grammarly’s ToneAI can help elevate your writing voice, general tone, and overall confidence.

Here are three reasons I’m thoroughly enjoying my Grammarly Premium subscription:

Communicate without complications

Grammarly is super easy to use. After just a few clicks, you can download Grammarly’s desktop app and access Grammarly's writing suggestions via sites like Gmail, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and most of your favorite desktop apps.

Pro tip: When a green G appears in the lower right corner of the text field, that means you’re all set. Although only basic writing suggestions will appear inline, clicking the green G allows you to open Premium suggestions for a more robust edit.

Communicate with confidence

Not everyone starts out as a confident writer—I wasn’t at the start of my career. This is why I truly appreciate that Grammarly identifies your tone and writing goals by analyzing word choice, phrasing, punctuation, and capitalization. Grammarly knows that tone is the key to every form of writing—particularly in conveying a sense of confidence.

One of Grammarly’s best aspects is that its ToneAI ensures your emails come across as:

  • Confident—Grammarly’s ToneAI provides suggestions that help your writing appear more confident when expressing solutions or pitching new ideas.
  • Personality—Grammarly’s ToneAI ensures that whatever you write is approachable and collaborative and helps build trust with lasting connections.
  • Purposeful—Grammarly’s Positive Framing ToneAI proposes sentence rewrites focusing on the solution rather than the problem.

Communicate without breaking the bank

Grammarly is truly accessible at only $11.97 monthly for a Premium subscription (annual plans bring greater savings).

Stop worrying about your work, and subscribe to Grammarly today. You'll cultivate the best tools to confidently and effectively communicate your thoughts, ideas, and wishes.

These days, emailing has become one of the most important forms of communication. When we have no in-person or face-to-face interaction, we demand a lot from our emails and other forms of digital communication.

These messages need to show off our tone, our personality, our professionalism, and our confidence—all through electronic communication. While we may think adding an exclamation mark here or a witty joke there helps our personality shine through, the reality is that it’s all down to how the reader interprets your email.

Since the writer only controls half of the conversation, it’s critical that emails land precisely the way you want. And that’s where Grammarlycomes in.

Grammarly’s tone detector, available to all users, and tone suggestions, which are a feature of Grammarly Premium, can help your emails hit the mark every time, articulating confidence and professionalism. Using an AI-powered tone checker, Grammarly identifies your tone by analyzing word choice, phrasing, punctuation, and capitalization.

Here are a few red flags to watch out for in your emails and how Grammarly can help:

Harsh Tone

Work emails should be encouraging, collaborative, and solution-oriented. The wrong tone can cause your writing to come across as harsh or overly critical.

Grammarly’s tone suggestions oriented toward Positive Framing can propose sentence revisions focusing on the solution rather than the obstacle. This feature can target negatively framed sentences and present rewrites that are forward-thinking and results-oriented.

With a positive tone, your emails with your team will flow seamlessly without inadvertently criticizing or casting blame. With Grammarly by your side, you’ll be more likely to find those quick fixes together.

Lack of Confidence

The opposite of a sharp email is an indecisive email. Drop “I think” and “I wonder”—establish your self-assurance.

When you’re pitching new ideas or proposing a plan, tone suggestions aimed at confidence can help you sound persuasive and naturally sure of yourself. Through this feature, you’re more likely to secure higher alignment or a greater buy-in from stakeholders.

Not only will Grammarly help you sound more self-confident, but you can rest assured that your email is landing exactly as you intend.

Impersonal

Perhaps the easiest mistake to make—your tone appears stiff and impersonal. Finding a way to reveal your personality through email is tricky, but it can be important. There are ways to seem personable that don’t require a ton of exclamation points or emoji.

Want a more personable tone? With suggestions aimed at achieving that, this feature of Grammarly Premium helps you come off as approachable and welcoming, which goes a long way in building lasting connections.

Beyond letting you aim for a personable, confident, and positive tone, there’s also an overall tone detector that simply identifies where your tone may be misinterpreted and offers effective rewrites.

Grammarly’s suggestions can be invaluable for those looking to navigate difficult conversations, build productive relationships, and display a solid sense of confidence when writing.

With Grammarly, you can convey urgency with empathy, build trust while delivering news, and provide affirmative feedback.

Spanish is my first language. I grew up speaking, reading, and writing it fluently, so I wasn’t always confident when communicating in English — especially professionally.

After college, I was fortunate enough to land an amazing role in communications. Only a week into my new position, I realized that the job involved writing more emails, newsletters, and announcements than I had anticipated. So I found myself, once again, self-conscious about my English skills.

Thankfully, my coworker, who is also bilingual, recommended that I check out Grammarly — a free AI-powered communication assistance that helped take my writing to the next level.

Here are five things Grammarly helped me with.

Grammar

By identifying incorrect punctuation, missing commas, and run-on sentences, Grammarly has vastly improved my grammar. The writing assistance not only guides me through each of my mistakes but also provides insightful suggestions that improve and strengthen my writing.

I love that Grammarly includes ‘Learn More’ links underneath each suggestion, so I fully understand any words, terms, or rules I’m not familiar with.

Vocabulary

I have an annoying habit of redundancy. So it’s extremely helpful when Grammarly spots overused words, such as “really” and “actually,” that add little meaning to my message. It catches frequently used words and conveniently offers a diverse selection of synonyms.

I consistently remove repetition from my writing and expand my personal vocabulary at the same time.

Tone

Grammarly detects the tone reflected in my writing and makes appropriate suggestions and changes, so my perspective comes across the way I intend. With the goal feature, I set goals that are tailored to my audience and objectives.

The Weekly Insights Report pinpoints the distinctive tones reflected in my writing over the past week and alerts me if there have been any shifts in a tone’s frequency. It’s great to receive such specific data and see how my skills are improving over time.

Mobile Mastery

My favorite part of Grammarly? I can take it anywhere.

No more panic that I’ve missed a communications blast while on my morning commute. Grammarly is compatible with all devices and provides an all-in-one experience that helps bilingual writers communicate clearly and effectively. Once I set up Grammarly on my laptop and phone, I simply jump in whenever and wherever I need.

Productivity

Now that I have Grammarly, I send out all sorts of effective communications from work and from home. Grammarly keeps me calm and confident and saves so much time. I no longer break my writing flow by looking up synonyms or grammatical rules. Overall, Grammarly’s communication assistance is like another pair of eyes. It’s akin to having an English tutor in your pocket.

It’s helped me settle into my new role because I can articulate precisely in both Spanish and English. These days, I feel like I’m making a dynamic impression at my new company.

With Grammarly, there’s no need to worry that you don’t have the tools to communicate, even if English isn’t your first language.

Super helpful and easy to download, Grammarly is an instant enhancement to your life. Great for work, school, your personal life, and even creative writing!

Editor’s Note:I’m a sophomore in college, and after I spent half my day at the peer tutor office, I realized my writing wasn’t where it needed to be. I didn’t want to visit them every time I needed help, so I looked into alternatives, which is how I found my own personal tutor, Grammarly.

Before Grammarly

College is all fun and games until you find out professors dock your grade for any and all spelling mistakes.

Last semester, I had a professor mandate that everyone in the class go to our on-campus peer tutor service so we could gauge our grammar and writing skills.

One by one we all went, and one by one we came out with papers covered in red circles, underlined text, and crossed-out paragraphs. We all laughed about it, but at the end of the day, it was pretty alarming to see how many errors I personally had. I’m not claiming I’m some best-selling author, but I thought I could catch a run-on sentence fairly easily.

After the initial shock wore off, I decided to go back to the peer tutor office for help with papers I was writing for other classes. It was the same song and dance, and I felt like I was just making the same mistakes over and over again — I wasn’t really learning where the problem stemmed from, either.

I found one tutor who went through my writing and explained what the problem was and how to fix it moving forward, but she was always booked — sometimes I’d have to wait weeks to see her again.

After the semester ended, I realized I hadn’t learned anything past grammar. It was so hit-or-miss depending on which tutor I got, and truth be told, I spent way too much time there.

I started looking into alternatives that worked around my schedule and did more than just troll for grammar. And that’s when I found Grammarly.

After Grammarly

Grammarly was such a game-changer for me, I don’t even know where to start. Now my confidence is through the roof, and I don’t feel like I need to reread my emails or essays a million times. Plus, I don’t have to practically live at the tutor office!

The spell-check is next level; it catches things like word redundancy when I use words like ‘really’ too much, and the Premium version offers word overuse, which identifies places where I use certain words too many times and offers robust alternatives. However, it offers way more than just spell-check, and that’s why I’m hooked.

Grammarly has a tone detector, which I never knew I needed. Let’s just say sometimes my tone is a little . . . aggressive? It analyzes my word choice, phrasing, punctuation, and even capitalization to determine my overall tone.

In addition to checking the tone, Grammarly also lets me write with a particular audience in mind. It gives me tailored suggestions based on my objective and audience. For example, I can choose if I’m talking to a general, knowledgeable, or expert audience, and then I can go so far as to choose formality level — informal, neutral, or formal.

And last but not least — and certainly my favorite aspect of Grammarly — I can take it anywhere. So long, peer tutor office! I downloaded the Grammarly Keyboard to my phone, so no matter where I am or what device I’m using, I know my grammar, tone, and everything in between is on point.

Grammarly is like having your own personal peer tutor in your pocket but better. Whether I’m pulling an all-nighter to finish an essay or sending a quick email to a professor, I can rely on Grammarly 24/7 to make sure my writing is in great shape. I’m actually learning through Grammarly, and with it I’m improving my overall writing capabilities.

Coming into my freshman year of college, I was confident that I could handle anything. I was the top of my high school class and a skilled writer who contributed to the school newspaper and even wrote for a few local publications on the side. I knew I could communicate my ideas effectively and clearly (my personal essay was pretty excellent if I do say so myself).

However, once I began my collegiate-level coursework, everything changed. I wrote more than ever—papers, emails, applications to clubs—the list went on and on. More importantly, my work was held to a higher standard than I was used to. Between ceaseless coursework and lofty expectations, my confidence as a writer began to diminish.

There were several moments during my freshman year, where I was utterly embarrassed about my writing quality. For example, in my journalism class, I received a C+ for a paper about the countercultural movement of the 1960s. My professor told me that my content was insightful but challenging to understand, given various grammatical and syntactic errors.

I told myself to be more careful next time and use this as a learning experience. However, three days later, I realized that an email I sent to another professor had several glaring spelling errors due to my hastiness. These writing mistakes weren't a one-time occurrence.

It was slightly embarrassing admitting that I couldn't handle my workload right out of the gate, but I also knew that I could do something about it. There were plenty of writing workshops and helpful tutoring sessions with professors. Still, the one tool I found to be the most useful (yes, more valuable than my professors) was Grammarly. My academic advisor initially recommended I download Grammarly, a free AI-powered writing assistant. Grammarly is designed to make you the best writer possible. It's perfect for college students looking to polish their writing, and is so much more than an advanced spell-checker. As you type, it offers suggestions to make your writing correct, clear, and concise.

If you download the Grammarly browser extension, you can directly access writing suggestions in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Gmail, and other popular platforms. It's been incredibly helpful when completing group assignments on a shared document or sending a lengthy email to a professor.

Since I found the free version of Grammarly so helpful, I decided to upgrade to Premium for the following year. I was blown away by the advanced suggestions Premium offers. It's like having a dictionary, a thesaurus, the Purdue Writing Guide, and so much more, all in one place. One of my favorite features is selecting the domain of my writing, such as academic or email, in the goals panel. This allows me to get tailored suggestions based on the type of writing I'm doing.

Another great feature is the plagiarism checker. I'm always doing a ton of research for various assignments and often forget to paraphrase my notes (especially if it's been a while since I first wrote them down). Grammarly's plagiarism checker ensures that every piece of work you submit is 100% original. Given my university's academic integrity policy, this is a must-have. Suppose you're still unsure about your writing after using all of these features. In that case, you can even hire a human proofreader from Grammarly to help you out!

Since downloading Grammarly, I've become far more confident in my writing ability. Funny enough, I even started writing for my university's newspaper. My vocabulary is more refined than ever, and my sentences are clear and concise. I'm even considering an English minor! Trust me, as a college student, Grammarly (free or Premium) is one of the best investments you can make. Download Grammarly today to elevate your writing forever.

Ever since downloading Grammarly's writing assistant, my professional life has changed. I no longer have pesky typos or awkward phrases in my writing. Now that I have a go-to way to spell-check and, most importantly, grammar-check, my writing has definitely improved. Grammarlyis conveniently available as a desktop app, browser extension, and mobile keyboard.

I didn't realize I'd love the weekly Grammarly Insights reports so much. Since I set up my account, I receive a weekly email breaking down my Grammarly use. This data isn't just cool—it's another way to help my writing improve.

Here are 5 areas Grammarly Insights reports cover and how they've helped me:

Mastery

I still make writing mistakes, but I make far fewer errors with Grammarly. The Mastery section of the report analyzes the number of errors I've corrected with Grammarly relative to the total words written. Fewer mistakes mean that my writing is becoming more accurate, and I love seeing my progress week after week.

And if you have a competitive edge like me, you'll also love seeing how well you do compared to other users.

Tone

Tone is a difficult area for me. Honestly, I'm not the best at putting my feelings into words, but I want my writing to be perceived the right way.

I like that Grammarly shows me exactly what tone I'm reflecting in my writing and suggests changes I can make to come across as I intend. When it comes to communicating effectively, the tone detector has been a lifesaver for me.

The weekly Grammarly Insights reports tell me the different tones detected in my writing over the past week, and if any tone's frequency has changed. It's great to receive this data.

Productivity

There's nothing that keeps me going more than seeing my productivity—I'm the type of person who is obsessive about their step count. Well, with Grammarly, I can now track how many words I've checked, which is a whole new level of productivity.

Each week, I see my total word count and how it compares to previous weeks. I also see how I compare to other Grammarly users. And when I use Grammarly for consecutive weeks, I earn fun badges to mark my achievements. It's a fun twist that keeps me writing!

Vocabulary

I wouldn't consider myself a walking thesaurus, but I'd say that my vocabulary is pretty advanced. However, there's never been a way for me to prove that until Grammarly started sending my weekly insights.

Grammarly tracks how many unique words I've written each week. It also shows a percentage based on how varied and diverse my lexicon is relative to other Grammarly users.

Mistakes

While I don't like focusing on my flaws, this section of the report is the most important to me. Grammarlybreaks down my top 3 mistakes for the week with the number of times I made them. These could include incorrect punctuation, missing commas, and run-on sentences, to name a few.

Thankfully, it also includes links to learn more so that I don't just recognize my mistakes; I also understand how to leave those pesky faults behind.

The Grammarly Insights reports are amazing. I actually look forward to them popping up in my inbox each week. Grammarly has a free offering, but I upgraded to Grammarly Premium for an annual subscription that only costs $11.66 per month.
