Have a Punk Christmas with Brent Butler's "Brooklyn Christmas Eve"

The LA-based songwriter is the #ZackMorrisofRap.

What says Christmas in Brooklyn better than a chorus of, "Light up my Christmas tree like a cigarette / We don't need eggnog / We've got Jameson"?

Each holiday season, we're bombarded with new Christmas albums. There's the country guy you forgot about, that one singer from the '80s your mom likes, and a Broadway person that no one really knows. The songs probably include a heartfelt "White Christmas" and an uninspired "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree."

For her upcoming holiday album Snow Waltz (out Oct. 7), Lindsey Stirling wanted something different. The lead single, "Ice Storm," is an intense instrumental with hard rock drums, the original "Magic" featuring David Archuleta is a tribute to her beloved late father, and for her version of "The Little Drummer Boy," she let the drummer actually drum.

From her home studio, Stirling covers all things Christmas music with Jordan Edwards. Watch the full interview below.

D!XON Radiates Holiday Cheer on "Let It Snow"

D!XON's video radiates joy at a time when it's desperately needed.

This week, a blizzard slammed New York City.

The snow, coming at the end of a difficult and painful year, felt cathartic. Everyone seemed to be out celebrating on social media. At the end of a terrible year, it felt like we could just come together over something other than horror and watch the snow fall, wiping away everything and inviting us into a new season.

There is no reason for Christmas not to be metal this year.

As our collective 2020 anger and stress boil over, Christmastime can in no way shape or form be heartwarming or innocent this year. For those who will no doubt roll their eyes at the yearly Christmas anthems, why not give your Christmas a little sadistic flair to honor a sadistic year?

Goo Goo Dolls

The Goo Goo Dolls' first holiday album, It's Christmas All Over, dropped on October 30, but from the opening moments of our conversation, it's clear that John Rzeznik isn't going to bullsh*t me.

"Of course, it's cheesy, it's a Christmas album, and at points, it gets a little sappy. But there are also points that are badass," said Rzeznik. The lead singer genuinely adores Christmas and assures me that he and his family go all out every year. He embellishes his house with decorations and even has a toy train he wraps around the tree.

"[Christmas] is all about making the best connection that you can, even if it's six feet away," he said. Jokes aside, the band's intention behind the album remains earnest. "Listen, If I ever have a chance to help people forget their problems for 33 minutes, then I should do it," he said. "These are not ordinary times."

Have a Punk Christmas with Brent Butler's "Brooklyn Christmas Eve"

The Brooklyn-based songwriter is the #ZackMorrisofRap.

What says Christmas in Brooklyn better than a chorus of, "Light up my Christmas tree like a cigarette / We don't need eggnog / We've got Jameson?"

The punk sound of Brent Butler's Christmas ode captures the vibrant energy of the borough. Butler's feverish guitar riffs, clever melody, and charmingly off-kilter lyrics celebrate youth and independence in the face of holiday drudgery. "Well the magic starts to fade from this TV holiday / Yeah, I guess it ain't the same as when you're young," he croons. "Unemployed, so we got no shopping bags / But we're happy with the little things we have / Radio says this is the best time of the year / But my wish is for summer to appear." The song shifts from anthemic verses about reckless youth to earnest sentiment, "It doesn't matter where you're from / we're at home right now," he sings.

Influenced by the likes of The Pogues and Green Day, Butler is the self-proclaimed "#ZackMorrisofRap." Also called the #DavidBowieofHipHop, his concept album The Cold Press, released in 2015 with Bronx-born rapper Deascent, is considered a "hip hopera" for its narrative quality, weaving a story throughout each song. Butler released his debut EP Lilac in 2018, blending hip-hip, alternative rock, and pop punk in a genre-bending experience as unique as it is ambitious.
