People are Flipping...Their Pancakes!

The International House of Pancakes, more commonly referred to as IHOP has tweeted that they're changing their name on June 11, swapping in a lowercase "b" in place of the "P" which currently makes perfect sense, considering it stands for "pancakes." Is this a light-hearted marketing strategy or a legit business update? Followers and fans of the franchise are speculating, not only if this change is real but what the heck the "b" represents.

Could it be "breakfast?" "Bacon?" "Brunch?" "Belly fat?" All would be reasonable, but what about the pancakes? People love IHOP for their generous stacks of buttermilk pancakes, from the "Rooty Tooty Fresh 'N Fruity" to their "Cupcake Pancakes." Who says "the most important meal of the day" has to be good for you anyhow?

Of course, IHOP serves up more than pancakes alone, they dish up other breakfast favorites like waffles and French toast and sandwiches and burgers come lunchtime. But the pancakes are the real draw, so why mess with a good thing? And as per CNN, things are good for the brand. "The stock is up nearly 25% this year because sales are growing." So, is this whole "b" thing a load of BS?

Naturally, this news (if that's what we're calling it) is making headlines, causing folks to flock to IHOP's social media pages to weigh in and offer up their two sense. Most people think it's all a gimmick to cause a stir, possibly for the release of a new menu item or just to have a little fun with advertising. With over 1,650 locations around the world, updating all the signage and menus would be quite a job. And "IHOP" just has more of a ring to it than [eye-hobb], as IHOP has explained how it is properly pronounced.

Do you think the chain ought to keep the "P" in "pancakes" or would you be OK with "b?" We'll have to wait 'till June 11 to see what IHOP serves up. No matter what they do, a pancake by any other name would taste as sweet.
