Now that the new year is here, I want to make a conscious effort to do my bit for the environment and become more eco-friendly.

I have removed a lot of single-use plastic from my house, added some vegetarian meals to my weekly plan and I have even started cycling instead of driving whenever it's not too cold out

One thing that never crossed my mind was my laundry detergent- I just assumed every brand is the same blue goo that comes in a plastic bottle. That was until my friend was telling me about her new detergent, MyGreenFills. It's all-natural, non-toxic refillable laundry detergents. She said she hated buying the big plastic containers full of harmful chemicals every few weeks, so she made the switch.

I love the idea of anything refillable to minimize plastic and packaging. Plus, it would mean one less thing on the grocery list on my trips to the store, so I had to check them out.

MyGreenFills has so many natural cleaning products; glass cleaner, grease remover, wood, and furniture polish, and bathroom cleaner. They even have every possible laundry product - detergent, stain stick, dryer angels, machine cleaner, and even a brightening booster.

I love the idea of making this eco-friendly swap of daily essential items, but I was unsure if all-natural ingredients would work. Would they actually clean as well as the generic cleaners I'm used to? Now more than ever, I want my home to be as clean as possible and I love that fresh smell a deep clean leaves across my whole house. Was I going to get the same results from these products?

I tried a natural dish cleaner before and it left me super disappointed. Taking out a load of washing to see it still has stains would not be good!

But I was never going to know if it worked or not until I tried it for myself, and my friend loves it, so I ordered their Signature Scent Laundry Wash and their stain stick to test out the MyGreenFills products.

When they arrived at my doorstep I was so curious to try it out, that I grabbed all the dirty clothes I could find and put on a load right away. I used the stain stick on a grease stain I got on my fave pair of jeans before putting them in. Once the machine had stopped spinning I opened the washing machine door to get an amazing fresh smell, which I wasn't expecting.

I pulled all the clothes out and examined them. All of the stains were gone (even the grease stain!), and they looked and smelt completely clean. I left them to dry and came back for the final check, they felt amazing, soft, and not at all stiff.

When my husband commented on how good his old sweatshirt felt I knew my previous assumption about all-natural cleaning products was so wrong. After such good results, I decided to go and order more MyGreenFills laundry and cleaning products.

I am now a proud member of MyGreenFills membership and love receiving all my laundry and household cleaning products every month to my doorstep. It's so simple, in your first order you receive your laundry jug and cleaning spray bottles, and then every order after that they send you refillable packets of the concentrated formulas that you just add water to. It is so much less packaging, it's amazing. My recycling bin is a lot less full these days thanks to MyGreenFills.

The all-purpose, bathroom, and grease cleaners have made cleaning my home so much easier, and safer. And you can change your order at any time so easy to add in their extra items like the essential oils, Dryer Angles, Oxy Boost, and Enzyme stain remover whenever you need them. It couldn't be more convenient.

I was worried natural cleaning products wouldn't have the same effect but I was so wrong. Recently it's been important to keep everything clean, but it's also just as important to help the environment in any way we can. With MyGreenFills you can do both.

Everyone should join the MyGreenFills movement, you definitely won't regret it.

The Best Laundry Detergents

Do you remember the conscious decision to buy your current brand of detergent? Most of us grab the same kind every time, without even wondering why.

Is it the best? Does it matter? Is every detergent exactly the same?!

We did some research on the top detergent brands as well as some lesser-known ones - they do have clear pros and cons!

Through reviews and first-hand experience, we compared Arm & Hammer, Persil, Gain, and MyGreenFills.

Here's what we thought:

Arm & Hammer

This "powerfully clean, naturally fresh" detergent has been around forever. The classic orange jug has a Clean Burst™ scent and uses baking soda. Do all detergents use baking soda? Apparently, it whitens whites and makes everything softer, so you get to use less product! We adore high efficiency formulas.

However, we did wash one white shirt with a rainbow on it that came out with blue spots by the collar. Maybe the blue detergent soaked into a stain? We're not sure, but it was pretty upsetting. It rained on our rainbow. :(

Persil

One of our staffers is from France, and she grew up using Persil. It only came to the U.S. in 2015, but it's a cult favorite. We definitely found this to be a strong clean. It got out all our stains!

As for the signature scent, we're split - some people like it, and some thought it was too perfumy. This product also still isn't widely available, and when it's offered, it's sometimes not the most affordable option.

Gain

Why does Gain have one million different detergent products? We get that sometimes you want something for tough stains or sensitive skin, but having so many gives us less hope that one of them is amazing.

That said, this one works great, and they offer so many scents: Hawaiian Aloha, Apple Mango Tango, Thai Dragon Fruit, White Tea Lavender, Midnight Bloom…honestly, the formulas seem to work well, but with everything coming out recently on how questionable synthetic fragrances are it doesn't quite sit right.

MyGreenFills

We wanted to shake things up by trying an online brand - MyGreenFills is also different because they don't use any toxins or synthetic fragrances, and they offer refills. You get your first jug of laundry wash and then get monthly (or bimonthly, or every 3 months…) concentrated refills, so you don't have to keep lugging around heavy jugs full of 99% water, and you save money.

It's really efficient! It got coffee stains completely out of a white t-shirt. You only need a little bit, and it's around $0.14 per load compared to around $0.30 for most other big-name detergents. You're never locked into a subscription, but committing to something you've never tried can be hard.

Overall Verdict

The little guy won! MyGreenFills stood up to the formulas of the bigger brand names and even surpassed some. Since there's no dye, thickeners, or synthetic fragrance (though you can add essential oils), there weren't any remnants in our clothes, just that good clean feeling. It's also perfect for sensitive skin or allergies since there are no harsh chemicals, and it really, really cleans.

You can pause or cancel your subscription at any time, so if that's what's holding you back, we say give it a shot - getting it delivered to your door also means less big jugs in your shopping cart. We're also curious about the rest of their products! The customer reviews are really positive.

With MyGreenFills, you get to say goodbye to plastic, toxins, and stains, so that's why it's our favorite.

Detergent is detergent, right?

We thought they were all the same until our staff started doing some research on the big brands as well as the smaller companies with cult followings.

Comparing and contrasting detergents may seem mundane, so we did all the hard work for you! Based on research and reviews, we wanted to look at these top favorites to figure out which was the best: Tide, Love Home And Planet, Seventh Generation, MyGreenFills, and Biokleen.

Here are our findings:

Tide

Everyone knows the classic orange jug and has used it at some point, but when we went to do research on the actual product, we were overwhelmed. There are so many different versions! With high-efficiency versions, greener versions, gentler versions, etc., we doubted the original was the best. Similar to the green Gain jug, there were too many options for us to give the brand a fair assessment. This is the most basic detergent.

One of our staffers is also freaked out by the blue - why is it so, so blue? The artificial dye isn't necessary at all. We did some research and found out that companies use a blue dye to trick consumers into thinking their whites & colors are brighter....sadly they're not.

Love, Home, And Planet

This one has great reviews from users - they're vegan, cruelty-free, and highly concentrated. You only need a little bit of formula for a full wash, and reviews thank them for the efficiency! However, this company is heavily targeted towards women. The scents are overpowering and way too feminine, like "Rose Petal & Murumuru" or "Lavender & Argan Oil." If you're living in a home with anyone sensitive to strong fragrance or not particularly fond of feminine scents, this one may not be the best choice.

Seventh Generation

One of the most well-known green cleaning companies, Seventh Generation has a line of laundry detergents that are free of dyes and synthetic fragrances. They have regular versions in scents like citrus and lavender, and highly concentrated versions that boast 66 loads per 23 oz. bottle. The bottle is also made from recycled plastic!

Biokleen

On the green scene is Biokleen - they have, vegan, hypoallergenic highly concentrated formulas in different scents, including unscented. They have an impressive list of ingredients they refuse to use, but unfortunately, their formulas don't seem to be heavy-duty - it doesn't seem to pass the stain test that most detergents do. If someone in your household is particularly messy (everyone from babies to red-wine drinkers) this may not be the right choice.

MyGreenFills

This small green company offers something different: refills. They're an online retailer, so you can get your first jugs of laundry wash delivered to your door, and then sign up for refills, so you're not producing more plastic bottles. We loved the idea, and the fact that they also boast potent formulas - their unscented, toxin-free laundry detergent (they call it "wash") only costs $0.14 per load compared to around $0.30 for big-name detergents. Affordable, green, and high efficiency - we love it!

If you want a scent, they offer a scented formula that is not overpowering, yet perfectly pronounced by plant and essential oils.

People love their laundry wash and love the reduction of plastic!

Overall Verdict

Out of all the laundry detergent, we're loving the MyGreenFills Laundry Wash. It's high-quality and concentrated with no toxins, and is more affordable than some of the other green options. Honestly, we didn't miss that "laundry smell" we'd grown up with - the unscented wash just made everything smell fresh and clean, and if we wanted more, the essential oil blends are absolutely lovely (those of us who prefer scented wash were pleased that it smelled so lovely without being overpowering).

Even though they don't have the name recognition of Tide or even Seventh Generation, we found that we actually preferred a smaller company - their customer reviews are excellent and with such a wide range of products, we're excited to try everything.

Plus, their detergent really cleans, unlike a lot of other "green cleaners" in the space. This green company has something for everything: they offer hand soap, all-purpose cleaners, wood cleaners, essential oils, wool dryer balls, laundry wash and SO much more, all without parabens, toxins, or fragrances.

We'd recommend MyGreenFillsfor anyone who wants affordable, green, high-efficiency laundry products delivered straight to their door!

Most Laundry Subscriptions Aren't Worth It

But you gotta try Frey.

My roommate's cool, but the guy literally has a subscription for everything.

I'm all for convenience and anything that will make my life easier, but some of the subscriptions he's signed up for are downright silly.

I mean, the guy is a member of the "dive bar shirts club" whatever that is.

Plus, he always has a ridiculously high pile of laundry stacked in his room. So, a few months ago, when I noticed it had magically disappeared, I figured he must have found some subscription service that came and did it for him. That, or his mom dropped by.

After grilling him, he told me that he had found a subscription service - Frey - they deliver laundry products right to your door. Unless they're gonna come into my apartment, wash, and fold my laundry, then I'm not impressed.

He assured me that it smelled so good that it made doing laundry a little less awful. I shrugged it off as yet another of his unnecessary subscriptions until he told me I could try it myself for $1!

I checked out the Frey site and immediately liked the sleek packaging. I've never been a fan of the aroma of store-bought detergent, or how it makes my clothes feel, not to mention how it dries out my skin. But it seemed like my only option.

But Frey's products are free from bad stuff like parabens and sulfates, so I gotta admit, even I was intrigued. It's also way more concentrated than store-bought detergent, so you use less and actually save money. Now you're talkin'.

I kept digging on the site and discovered Frey has other products besides detergent: fabric conditioner, there's a stain remover spray, even a fragrance enhancer that keeps your clothes smelling fresh between washes.

The reviews are pretty epic, too. "My girlfriend keeps stealing my clothing so she can lay around in them and always have the smell of me around because "I've never smelled this good before"- LOL.

I signed up and gave them my info - I figured for a $1, I had nothing to lose. Plus, these guys actually care about the environmental impact of their products.

They plant a tree for every order they receive, they're B Corp, and PETA certified, and their concentrated formula means you'll use less, which both your clothes and the earth will appreciate.

I always put off doing laundry until the very last minute (I'm talking turning underwear inside out), so when my Frey samples arrived, I decided to bite the bullet.

Ok, it really does smell good. Like cologne mixed with something else, something earthy that I can't quite put my finger on, but I like it. And a little really goes a long way.

My clothes came out smelling fresh, and they kept their shape.

The samples lasted for weeks, and by the time I ran out, Frey had shipped my Complete Laundry Package. It includes detergent, fabric conditioner, and dryer sheets. I hate being locked into subscriptions, but my Frey plan is easy to pause or cancel at any time.

It just makes sense and saves me money - for real. When I did the math, store -ought detergents can cost up to $0.92 a load, whereas Frey costs only $0.42 per load.

That, plus my clothes are retaining that new look, meaning I can wear them longer.

All I can say is that Frey is pretty awesome. I no longer have to worry about buying regular detergent, I'm saving money, and on top of that, I smell damn good.

I Never Thought Laundry Detergent Mattered Until I Tried FREY

This Laundry Detergent Smells So Nice You Won't Need To Waste Money On Cologne

My daily wardrobe used to consist of sweatpants, t-shirts, and sneakers--basically anything that I could wear to the gym or throw on as soon as I rolled out of bed. But as I've gotten older, that's changed. Whether it's a friend's wedding, a formal work event, or some rooftop happy hour, my old wardrobe just wasn't cutting it, so in the past few years, I've started paying more attention to what I wear. That means developing a personal style, and for better or worse, spending more money or time on nicer clothes.

Now that I've upgraded my wardrobe, the way I think about laundry has changed. I used to throw everything into the wash at the same time, never think about heat settings, and buy the cheapest detergent I saw at the supermarket. But I started noticing that my new clothes were getting faded and worn down in the wash, so I began looking into whether there were better options out there than the bright blue goo or pods. Digging around on Instagram to see what other men of style used, I noticed a lot of people talking about Frey detergent. Its sleek look captured my attention right away. The bottle is a sophisticated black design with a pump, so it looks like a high-end product even though it's cheaper per load than the big name brands. It's apparently also vegan, cruelty-free, and made with biodegradable ingredients that put less strain on the environment. Since it's free of harsh chemicals like sulfates, so it's better for your clothes and your skin. I mean, think about it: your skin is constantly in contact with whatever mystery chemicals are in your detergent, that can have a huge effect on your body. That was enough to sell me.

An array of Frey products are lined up on a wooden table

I ordered the complete package from Frey which comes with detergent, fabric conditioner, and dryer sheets. The first time I used Frey, what blew me away was the scent. It's hard to capture in words, but it's sophisticated, almost like a cologne, made with natural scents like cedarwood, oakmoss, citrus, and amber. Honestly, it made me feel on top of my game, the same way I do when I get a new beard oil. The scent is pretty subtle but I liked it so much I went ahead and ordered their scent enhancing spray as well.

The nice smell alone was enough to convince me to keep using Frey, but the products also worked wonders on the look and feel of my clothes. I noticed my clothes kept their shape and color better than before, yet were still soft. Plus, one bottle lasted me what seemed like forever. Because it's more concentrated, you only have to use a few pumps as opposed to a whole cup or multiple pricey pods.

OK, it's still laundry. But with Frey, it feels a little less like a chore and more a part of helping build my aesthetic as I continue to develop a sense of style. I recommend it to all of my friends since it costs less than the big name brands, there's really nothing to lose.
