Naomi Campbell Lashes Out at ELLE Germany: “We Are Not a Trend”

The magazine put out an ill-advised campaign that proclaimed "Black is back."

ELLE Germany has come under fire for a new editorial campaign called "Black Is Back," which was offensive from start to finish.

The first problem begins with the ill-advised title, which seems to imply that blackness is a new trend, something that can be put on and taken off.

That wasn't all. The editorial used a photo of a model named Naomi Chin Wing with a caption that referred to a model named Janaye Furman. To add insult to injury, an issue called "Back to Black" of course features a white model on the cover.

Naomi Campbell lashed out at that, posting the caption, "This makes me so sad to see this, @bethannhardison @the_real_iman and I are here if you are not clear on the guidelines of diversity," Campbell writes. "Your mistake is highly insulting in every way ... I've said countless times we are not a TREND. We are here to STAY." She continues, "I too in my career have seen pictures of others models called me just because of the color of our skin, and recently seen many pictures of models of color being called being @adutakech... do you know what it feels like to do the job (@naomichinwing) and not even be given the right name credit?"

Adut Akech, a model who recently faced a similar issue—a photo of a different model was used in an interview with her—also commented, "SO SICKENING!! I'm over it honestly."

For her part, Janaye Furman posted herself sipping tea with the caption #blackisback.

The magazine's actions were first called out by the account Diet Prada on Instagram, which reports fashion industry missteps.

ELLE Germany responded with an Instagram post of their own. "This obviously was not our intention and we regret not being more sensitive to the possible misinterpretations. Misidentifying the model Naomi Chin Wing as Janaye Furman is a further error for which we apologize. We are aware of how problematic this is. This has definitely been a learning experience for us and, again, we deeply regret any harm or hurt we have unwittingly caused," it read.

Though this campaign is particularly riddled with missteps, this is far from an isolated incident. The fact that fashion magazines seem to have such poor sensitivity towards race reveals a chronic lack of diversity in higher-up editorial positions, and a lack of care and sensitivity in general. We can call-out publications for their mistakes all we want, but what we really should be calling for is an increase in diversity in all spheres of the media industry.

As one commenter wrote on ELLE Germany's Instagram post, "Perhaps if you had people of colour on your team (whose opinion you value), it may perhaps be an opportunity to make better executive decisions?"

Surface-level representation means nothing if it doesn't use input from the actual group that's being represented, and too often, diversity is used as a performance, something used to sell products. This is a problem that extends to the whole magazine and media industry. A 2018 study from The Guardian reveals that of the 214 bestselling magazine covers published in the UK last year, only 14 of them featured people of color on the front. The issue extends to children's magazines, meaning that so many kids still aren't seeing themselves represented in positions of power. While magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair have made efforts to prioritize diversity, it isn't enough.

Few things are more entertaining that watching models wipe-out at runway shows, and the Marc Jacobs Resort 2017 collection was a feast of pratfalls.

Perhaps there was something about the floor that caused three models to lose their balance in exactly the same place, but whatever the reason, it was a delight for viewers like me (and you).

The clothes and hair somehow lent themselves especially well to the slapstick effect. So did the models' courageous efforts to get up and continue shakily down the runway.

Their expressions are a perfect mixture of horror and determination.



It's hard to watch just once, isn't it? Falling models are like salted peanuts.

Don't feel bad, models! Even Naomi Campbell famously fell on her ass back in 1993, and look at her now! It was an epic fall that could have broken her neck, but it turned out to be a huge boost to her career.

Fashion is one of life's joy's, and fashion models falling are like Easter eggs (in both senses.)

Although, it has to be said, the chances of any mere mortal looking even a tenth as hot as Campbell, in any of her lingerie, are slim to none.

We all know that celebrities have a team of stylists and make up artists on hand to ensure their beauty shines through at all times - however there seems to be an area that is being overlooked and ending up…well, ugly.

Other than the basic pedicure available to all us lowly commoners, it seems that the rich and famous don’t get any other foot work, leaving their feet fails exposed for the world to see.

Corns, bunions, over hanging toes, crossed toes, wonky toes, claw toes – the list of foot flaws is endless and makes them human.

But wait! I don’t want human from my celebs. I want to look up to them, aspire to be them and be able to admire their beauty from head to toe.

Remember that saying there’s no such thing as bad publicity? Well that’s not true if you’re a charity and you want someone to front your campaign.

For many non-profits, controversial stars like Chris Brown, Naomi Campbell, Lindsay Lohan and Lance Armstrong need not apply.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, philanthropy executives and people who match stars with charitable causes have actually turned away some stars wanting to lend their services to help better the world – or in some cases, improve their public image.

One expert explains:

"You have to be appreciative and you can't say, 'Thank you for your interest, but there's no way in hell’.

“It has to be a much softer dismissal."

Presumably that’s what many non-profits told Breezy when his team allegedly approached several high-profile charities in a bid to clean up his image following his 2009 arrest for beating up Rihanna.

Seems mug shots are a no-no in this field.

According to Shawn Sachs—whose firm Sunshine Sachs represents charities like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

He says:

“If someone is taking mug shots and they’ve been associated with your brand, you will reap some of that bad [press] too.”

Just because you started the charity doesn’t make you immune either. Armstrong was ditched from his own charity, Livestrong Foundation, after his doping scandal led to him being stripped of his Tour de France titles.

Doing something that completely goes against the principles a charity represents is also a cardinal sin in the philanthropic world.

So, as you can probably imagine, Naomi Campbell strutting around in a sable coat, just after she said she’d rather go naked than drape herself in fur, didn’t sit well with PETA.

The animal rights organization’s senior vice president of communications, Lisa Lange, tells the Reporter: “We fired her for wearing fur.”

As for everybody's favorite serial liar, LiLo, in 2009 she was accused of exaggerating the success of her work after partnering with a non-profit to film a BBC documentary about child trafficking in India.

The actress tweeted just 24 hours after setting foot in the country: “Over 40 children saved so far…”

And when it comes to reality TV stars, they’ll wait a long time for Lara Shriftman at the PR firm Harrison & Shriftman to call on their services.

She says:

“I look for people who are really, really behind an issue and are working for the cause.

“Not someone who is just looking to get publicity for publicity’s sake.”
