Bland tofu and overcooked limp vegetables are not the reality of a vegan or plant-based diet anymore. There's so much more delicious variety to choose from now! Trying a plant-based diet can actually introduce you to new foods that you might've never tried before.
A vegan lifestyle strictly removes all animal products like red meat and dairy products from your diet, whereas eating plant-based does not mean you can't eat meat it just means you favor more plant-based foods. It means your meals are mostly plants: vegetables, whole grains, and fruits along with beans, seeds, and nuts. (And honey!; a non-vegan plant-based favorite.)
The plant-based diet has become very popular lately with many people wanting to find new ways to become more eco-friendly, aside from recycling and reducing their use of plastic. Eating less meat is one of the most impactful things you can do as an individual.

The positive environmental impact isn't the only reason people are switching, there are also many health benefits from eating plant-based meals. Plants have essential nutrients that you cannot get from other foods. The vitamins and minerals, phytochemicals, and antioxidants in plants help keep your cells healthy and your body in balance. This helps to boost your immune system, neutralizes toxins from pollution, bacteria, viruses, and reduces inflammation throughout the body and can remove free radicals in the body.
Plants contain a lot of fiber, which is so important to have in your diet, particularly to maintain a healthy gut. Fiber ensures you are better able to absorb the nutrients from food, it can lower cholesterol, stabilize blood sugar, and it's great for good bowel management. As plant-based diets focused on whole foods that are unprocessed it helps maintain a healthy weight.
There are so many reasons to try a plant-based diet but still, people stumble and find it hard to fully commit. Like every lifestyle change, it can seem daunting and complicated. You need to research new foods and then recipes on how to cook them properly and you have to make sure you are still getting a balanced meal. For plant-based newbies and for people who have got into a rut with their plant-based eating it can seem like too much effort.
But thankfully the meal delivery industry has taken notice of the plant-based movement and wants to make eating plant-based meals easy, convenient, and headache-free. 3 Habits To Kick In 2020 (It Might Be Easier Than You Think!)
This year has really made me become aware of a lot of my bad habits. Over the last few weeks, I've decided I need to get my act together and get rid of these habits once and for all.
So I came up with 3 goals, and I've found something that will support me to achieve all 3. I want to be healthier and more mindful in my eating and food purchasing habits, so I'm signing up for Splendid Spoon.
They send vegan and nutritious low-sugar low-calorie soups, smoothies, and grain bowls to your door, so it takes all the inconvenience out of eating more mindfully.
If deep down you know it's time, here are the top 3 habits you need to quit in 2020:
- Stop Overspending
Anyone else's 2019 bank statements look like a crime scene? Who buys this many paper towels?! When you don't plan, you always spend so much more money for convenience, I've realized. That means buying a new umbrella mid-downpour because you forgot to check the weather or splurging on holiday makeup even when you've got a pound of unopened glitter in your bathroom. Becoming organized, setting a weekly budget, and planning for the next day is going to save you so much money in the new year,
2. Stop Food Waste
Just so I don't have to look at another rotten onion in my fridge, I need to start learning how to cook my produce before it goes bad. Americans waste on average nearly a pound of food per day. That's so much!!!
If you plan your meals accordingly, or order from a service that sends individual meals to you, you'll stop aspiring to cook 3-course meals and then throwing out the ingredients 2 weeks later when you realize that was impossible.
3. Eat More Plant-Based Meals
I could never give up my grandma's meatballs, but I definitely could cut back on the amount of meat and dairy I consume. Proud flexitarian over here.
Although soy and "impossible" faux meat options can be great alternatives, there's plenty of protein and satiating nutrients to be found in food mostly derived from plants.
The three biggest issues in Western diets are the high amount of sodium, the lack of whole grains, and the lack of fruit, which can all be remedied by eating with a plant-based mindset.
Again, you don't have to go vegan! But a diet rich in plants has amazing benefits for your body.
Because of my unflattering track record when it comes to sticking with my goals, I ordered Splendid Spoon to help me tackle these habits. I would've fallen on my face without this easy to follow program. With pre-made individually packaged meals delivered right to my door, it's so easy to say no to takeout, never overeat thanks to their portion-controlled servings, and eat plant-based (of course).
I'm never bored and always full with Blueberry Coconut Cinnamon Acai Smoothies and Mexican Chili with Ancho peppers and Chipotle spice. If you need to tackle your goals around eating healthier or spending less money, Splendid Spoon is the way to go.
Lately, my diet's been a dumpster fire. It's frustrating because I really enjoy healthy food, but I'm terrible at cooking it. Now that I'm avoiding trips to the grocery store, I've gotten into the habit of getting take-out most days and eating less healthy.
I have the best intentions, but now that I can't go to the supermarket to get fresh ingredients as often as I'd like, I've been having trouble prepping and cooking meals.
Recently, I've started to feel the toll of my unhealthy diet, mentally and physically - I crash at 3pm every day and feel lousy every morning. Feeling frustrated, I needed to know if there was an easy hack to eating healthy. That's when I came across Splendid Spoon.
Splendid Spoon is a wellness brand that has ready-to-eat, vegan grain bowls, soups, smoothies, and wellness shots that are designed to give your body the nutrients you need. Plus, all meals are delivered to your doorstep. I had a lot of reservations about trying it, but after reading all the great reviews online, I decided to take the plunge.
Here's everything you need to know about Splendid Spoon:
How does it work?
Splendid Spoon is a subscription service that delivers ready-to-eat, nourishing, plant-based soups, smoothies, grain bowls, and wellness shots to your doorstep.
Are the meals going to fill me up?
Before starting, I was extremely skeptical about whether smoothies and soups would fill me up, but they actually do. These meals are high in fiber and good fats and are designed to fill you up and satisfy your hunger.
Does it taste bland?
I thought that they'd probably taste pretty bland, but their meals are so much better than I expected. They take inspiration from all over the globe, so between the Moroccan Lentil Soup and the Butternut Squash Ratatouille, I can eat healthy meals that are full of flavor. The Mexican Tomato Soup is my personal favorite - it has the perfect amount of spices! Mmm.
Is it expensive?
I chose the Breakfast + Lunch Reset plan, which is $135, and it comes out to be only $8 a meal! I saved so much money with this plan - I was spending a ridiculous amount on take out before. They also have the Breakfast + Lunch plan, which is $95 a week, and their Lunch plan, which is only $65 a week!
Will I get bored of the flavors?
Definitely not - there are over 40 flavors and meals to choose from. The smoothies satisfy my morning sweet-tooth with ingredients like coconut and banana - my favorite is the Chocolate Cherry Smoothie. Plus, the soups and grain bowls come in an array of exotic flavors - The Indian Aloo Gobi Quinoa, Red Beet Buddha Bowl, The Italian Tuscan White Bean & Tomato Bowl, to name a few. You can customize your weekly order so you only receive the meals that satisfy your taste buds.
Are they actually "healthy?"
All their grain bowls, soups, and smoothies are made with all-natural, super food ingredients that are vegan, GMO-free, and gluten-free. They're completely unprocessed and low in sugar and sodium. The whole grains reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and obesity. Plus, they give you loads of energy.
Do they really involve no prep?
Yup. The smoothies come ready to drink, and the soups and grain bowls just have to be heated in the microwave. And when I'm busy or tired, I don't have to worry about boiling or cooking anything. Plus, the portions are already the perfect size, so no more overindulging or scouring my pantry for more food.
Since starting Splendid Spoon two months ago, I'm really starting to see the benefits. I feel so much better, and don't have the same energy crashes anymore. I've lost a few pounds without even trying, which is just an added bonus. Not to mention all the money I've saved. If you would like to start eating healthier but don't have time to prep meals, I couldn't recommend Splendid Spoon more.
