SHY Martin Saves Herself on New Single

"Out of My Hands," the latest release from the Swedish songwriter, confronts a toxic relationship with lovelorn pop.

Hampus Hjellström

In an exclusive Popdust premiere, SHY Martin shares her newest release "Out of My Hands."

The Swedish artist's latest is a moody breakup letter, combining dreamy production with melancholy lyricism. SHY cut her teeth as a songwriter for artists like the Chainsmokers, Bebe Rexha, and Kygo before releasing her own EP, Overthinking, last December, a project drawing on the atmospheric pop acts she wrote for melded with her own pining flair. "Out of My Hands" continues the trend in darker territory, as SHY narrates leaving a toxic relationship, even as its hooks sink deeper into her.

The track opens with SHY Martin's vocals, tinged with an exhausted heartache, leading into a minimalist synth melody. "Out of My Hands" only builds from there, the melody expanding its scope along with an echoing guitar and a percolating beat. SHY's delicate voice gives a focus to the hazy production, providing clarity in the song's somber pop—and giving the lyrics a perfect context to unfold in. "Hating you is hard / Harder than I'll ever let you know," SHY admits, embodying the song's central contradiction of leaving an addictive love behind. She reflects on how good this relationship was, what it gave her before it consumed her world and chipped away at her identity. The act of leaving in "Out of My Hands" is SHY saving herself, but she's still haunted both by her feelings and the fear of starting over. By the end, she's determined, but the sound crystallizes her uncertainty, suffusing the track with a powerful apprehension.

With an ear for atmosphere and a clear sense of artistic direction, "Out of My Hands" is a stirring new offering from SHY Martin and an exciting indication of what's to come.

Spencer Ludwig Releases New Single "Watch Me Walk"

He will be joining Fonseca on a tour starting with a double-header in NYC on November 20th and 21st.

Put on your heels and get ready to strut across the runway after you listen to Spencer Ludwig's brand-spankin'-new single "Watch Me Walk."

Released Friday, the new song by the Los Angeles-born, half-Filipino vocalist and instrumentalist takes the listener out on the town, mixing funky pop beats with his signature trumpet sound. Your feet will tap and your head will bop as this pulsating single instantly conjures up a great night at the club with your friends.

"Watch me walk, in all my greatness," goes the main melody of the song. It becomes a rallying cry to be yourself and give the middle finger to anyone who says otherwise. "I am just the way I is," it screams.

The dance-inspired song is the follow-up to Ludwig's sexy single "Honeymoon" featuring Z & Drü Oliver, which debuted on Billboard.

Starting off in the multi-platinum band Capital Cities from 2012-2015, Ludwig has gone solo in recent years, starting off 2018 with his independent debut single "Just Wanna Dance," which debuted at #47 on the Spotify U.S. Viral Charts. He also spent time this year opening for The Chainsmokers, Jason Derulo, and Betty Who, and performing at Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Pride festivals across the country.

He was chosen as one of YouTube's ten acts for its "Artists in Residence" program this year, and will be joining Latin Grammy Award-winning artist Fonseca on his tour, starting with a double-header in NYC on November 20 th and 21st.

Speaker of the House Talks "Rock Me" and More

New single "Rock Me" is a departure from the artist's signature sound.

Philly-born artist and producer Dylan Orvell, AKA Speaker of the House, has been a steadily-rising star since he released his first single, "Wide Awake," in 2016.

25 million streams later, he's gone on tour supporting The Chainsmokers and Marshmello and has made the rounds across the festival circuit, playing Coachella, Camp Bisco, Hangout Festival, Moonrise, and Groove Cruise. He's had a massively successful year, releasing four singles, including his most recent powerhouse, "Rock Me."

Popdust caught up with Speaker of the House to discuss his career so far and what fans can expect from him in 2019!

What is music to you? What is the best explanation you can give as to how you define it?

Music takes on two roles in my life. It's a language and expressive tool for me to put my thoughts and feelings onto a canvas when I'm making it. And it's a means for escape, appreciation, and introspection when I listen.

How old were you when you decided you were going to make production into a career? Who are some of your earliest inspirations?

I was 20 years old when I decided that I had what it takes to succeed in music. I had been playing guitar my whole life, and was also savvy with computers and gaming. It was a perfect marriage of my skills to produce music on an electronic platform. My earliest inspirations were Deadmau5, Skrillex, Rusko, Kaskade, Flux Pavillon, and Porter Robinson.

Congrats on all the single releases this year! "Rock Me" is a little different than its predecessors in sound design. Can you tell us a little bit about the process behind its production?

"Rock Me" is definitely different from my last two singles. It's at the tempo I like best for house music. I was able to use some more signature sounds and a vibe that is reminiscent of my earlier electro and deep house work. It has a carefree vibe which is rare in my music. It shares just a few similarities with what I have coming next.

Who are some of your favorite current producers? Of all time?

Current favorites would include Lane 8, Rufus Du Sol, Tame Impala, Chris Lake, and Don Diablo. All-time list would include, Daft Punk, Deadmau5, Justice, and Avicii.

Do you prefer producing originals or reworking other artist's songs? Why?

I prefer making originals! I'll admit remixes are always great, but nothing compares to writing, recording, and producing your own records. With no assets it can be discouraging, and "Rock Me" is an example of how to make an original with little to no assets. However I'm at a point now where I am lucky enough to be working with some amazing vocalists, writers, labels for 2019; and that puts these next originals in a different ballpark.

You've performed at several festivals, including Coachella and Hangout. Do you have a favorite and what do you love most about playing at festivals?

Coachella was my favorite festival to perform at. Everything about it. The organization and staff were exactly how each festival should be. The crowd that showed up to my set was so excited and positive, and fun to interact with. The atmosphere and location is unmatched. Checked all the boxes.

Touring-wise, do you have any shows coming up? Where can fans catch you live?

I'm absolutely looking forward to going back to touring, and I can't wait to reunite with my fans, but this time in the studio has been amazing. It's going to be a short window until some of the bigger records I've made reach the airwaves, and starting in 2019 I'll be at a great point to come out of the studio and hit the stages!

If you hadn't taken the music route, what career path do you think you would have chosen?

I have no idea. I think my skills and interest were mostly in science and medicine, and I would have pursued that until I found something that drives my heart. If not for music, I would have searched for something else. I never wanted to do something for work that I didn't enjoy. I couldn't.

How would you sum up your music in two words?

My life.

Stonestreet's new video drives us into what she describes as a "left of center world taking us back to the dirty glam of the 90s, with vintage dresses, wigs, and busted barbies." I'm sold.

"With another banger in the bank, it's only a matter of time before Stonestreet starts cashing in." - BILLBOARD

Following her debut single, "Bankrupt," Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and all-around badass, Skyler Stonestreet, is back with her much-anticipated new single, "It Kinda Hurts." The record, which just dropped today, describes that sticky place after a relationship, in between love and hate, where seeing someone for whom you once had feelings… well… kinda hurts.

The video for "It Kinda Hurts," stylishly directed by Jason Koffeman, shows Skyler on the way to see an ex, with her new beau – a blow-up doll – along for the ride.

"This is a song about how emotions and connection don't just disappear because you've stopped dating someone," shares Stonestreet. "Sometimes people move on, or convince themselves they have, and it causes a lot of mixed feelings. I've been through this, and I know so many other people have. Trying to be happy without someone when they are seemingly happy without you…kinda hurts."

For the video, Koffeman and Stonestreet worked hand-in-hand to create a kind of left-of-center world, taking us back to the dirty glam of the 90s with vintage dresses, wigs and busted barbies. While there's a sparkle of Cyndi Lauper and a touch of Courtney Love, it's Stonestreet's beautifully breathy vocals that really shine through.

"We wanted to make a video that tapped into that messy feeling Skyler is singing about. A love story for nobody and everyone all at once," said director Jason Koffeman.

Born in Las Vegas, Stonestreet moved to Santa Barbara when she was nine years old, finally moving to Los Angeles after high school. After a brief stint at a music school, Skyler dropped out to pursue her career full-time.

For nearly a year, Stonestreet found herself in and out of doctor's offices, unable to figure out what was ailing her. After undergoing a series of tests, she was told that she had breast cancer – not to mention at a frighteningly young age (Less than 2% of women with breast cancer are diagnosed before the age of 30).

Surviver Stonestreet

Stonestreet is now cancer-free, and proudly rocking short hair to inspire young women. "Breast cancer is just one piece of my life," shares Skyler. "It doesn't define me. But now I want to help other people who are going through it. And I want girls to know that they should feel okay in their own skin."

Stonestreet has been a writer and vocalist on tracks like The Chainsmokers platinum single "Kanye," Marshmello's dance hit "Chasing Colors," and Dua Lipa's massive song "IDGAF," which has well over 600 million streams and is a bonafide global hit.

Stonestreet's music has been featured on Grey's Anatomy, One Tree Hill (CW), Jane By Design (ABC Family), Switched At Birth (ABC family), Royal Pains (USA), Ghost Whisperer (CBS), as well as on MTV, VH1 and Oxygen.

Music has saved me," she says. "As long as I keep writing, keep playing, and keep inspiring others through my music, I know I'm right where I need to be."

Glammed out

Exclusive interview with the star herself:

Skyler, welcome to Popdust! How have you been?

Thank you! I've been great! Excited about releasing new music

Can you talk to us more about "It Kinda Hurts?"
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this?

It Kinda Hurts is a personal story from start to finish, inspired by a past relationship and the complex emotions that come up when you run into that person.

Tell us a bit about the concept and making of the video!

For the video, I worked with the incredible Jason Koffeman (director) on creating a left of center world taking us back to the dirty glam of the 90s, with vintage dresses, wigs, and busted barbies. The video also reveals my new love interest....which is a blow up doll. :)

Which wig was your favorite? (mine was the #lilac one)

I loved them all to be honest, but I definitely think the orange was my favorite, I loved pairing with the baby blue dress.

What's your writing and recording process?

For my own music it's always different. Sometimes the melody and lyric come out at the same time which is really fun, or I have a concept that will sort of write itself, I've even had songs and ideas come to me in dreams.

Does this mean we can expect more new material from you - how's that coming along? If so, any tentative release date or title in mind for the next project?

Yes! So excited to be putting out new music, I've been working a lot with Nick Monson (Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Britney Spears) and Lauren Christy (Bebe Rexha, Avril Lavigne, G-Eazy, Dua Lipa) and I can't wait to start releasing it.

Any plans for upcoming shows?

Definitely! I've been in writing mode for the last few months but playing live is honestly one of my favorite things. It's where you can let all the emotion out and connect with all your new friends listening.
