Waterparks have never been a band interested in staying in one lane. Formed in Houston, Texas, the band built its reputation around an energetic blend of catchy melodies, electronic textures and punk guitars. Waterparks began gaining wider attention with their early releases, particularly the “Black Light” and “Cluster“ EPs. Their 2016 album “Double Dare” helped establish them as a major name in the alternative scene.
On this episode of The Popdust Podcast with Demi Ramos, Waterparks discuss their sixth studio album, “JINX”, marking the next chapter for the band. The story of the new album actually begins with Waterparks deciding to throw something away. After “INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY”, the band began working on a follow-up project called “INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY 2: LOST IN THE PROPERTY” Several songs connected to that project were released, but the album was eventually scrapped. Waterparks started again, and that reset was “JINX.”
The album opens with “TELL ME WHY,” featuring a star-studded lineup that includes Mark Hoppus, Danny Elfman, Eric Nally, and Dillon Francis. From there, Waterparks jump into “RED GUITAR,” “IF LYRICS WERE CONFIDENTIAL,” and “PROWLER,” establishing the album’s dynamic energy. One of the album’s biggest strengths is its refusal to sound exactly like any previous Waterparks record. There are still pop-punk instincts, but they’re surrounded by electronic production and darker moods. JINX is bold, unpredictable and completely Waterparks. And we wouldn’t want it any other way.
